How many more miles at 0 to empty?

So there is a major shortage in gas supply in NY. All the stations around my area are closed and the ones that are opened have at least a 2 mile long line. My car is at "19 miles to E" on the gauge reading. Tomorrow is my last day of work and I don't have work till next Friday, so I want to try and push it. I can't take a day off work. I have heard when the gauge reads "0 miles to E", the car can run another 5 miles. Can anyone confirm this?

according to map quest it's 8 miles to work from my house 1 way. To get there and back would be 16 miles. 75% highway and 25% local.

so if you get 20mpg, that's 10 miles you can go for when it hits E.

I have a feeling you should be able to make it and come back. Just take it easy when u come from a stop and slowly catch your speed. If possible let the car coast when it can.

For those that can avoid such a situation, it should not be done often (run the tank this close),as the fuel also keeps the fuel pump cool. Running the tank this low often can overheat the fuel pump and cause an early faulure.

In your case though, you're in a tough situation. I hope your area rebuilds quickly, and that you and all the families that were affected by this storm recover soon.

We're in the same boat. We don't have 2 miles gas lines, but the lines have been getting longer every day. I have a friend in Newburgh who told me they don't have any lines at the pump.

Here's what Cuomo has to say -
Fuel is on the way. You do not have to panic," said Cuomo, referring to the long gas lines in New York City and surrounding suburbs.

He said 8 million gallons of gas have already been delivered to terminals in New York State, and 28 million gallons more would be delivered in the next two days.

Hopefully this problem gets resolved by the end of the week. Any way you can car pool with a friend?

The car has a 16 gallon tank. I've gotten close to zero regularly and never put in more than 14.3 or so gallons. That tells me when the gauge says zero you still have two gallons or so left.

Ive gone 10 miles once my car got down to Zero miles remaining. Put 14.7 gallons in it when I got to the gas station. Was trying to see how far it would go in a situation I had to keep going. Dont know how close to 16 gallons in the tank is usable though. Love how the guages turn red when you get to 5 miles remaining LOL

I made it, it was at "1 mile to E", on the gauge. I was lucky traffic was flowing at 50-60mph and not stop and go.

Forget that thing. At some point when the fuel isn't limited, you need to get the needle down to E, get to a gas station and fill it all the way up, so you can figure out how much gas is still in the tank when you're near the E on the gauge.

That's good that you made it.

Now see how far you can push it.

I waited in line for gas with a container last night and managed to get 5 gallons. Multiple stations are still closed as of today. I don't see much improvement.

Hey Will3212,

As per your Owner’s Guide (for future reference):The amount of usable fuel in the empty reserve varies and should not be relied upon to increase driving range. When refueling your vehicle after the fuel gauge indicates empty, you might not be able to refuel the full amount of the advertised capacity of the fuel tank due to the empty reserve still present in the tank.
I hope this helps. Stay safe.
