Hit and run car accident, 2012 Mustang, picture inside
Picture
So today I parked my 2012 mustang on the street outside my gym. When I got back my driver's side mirror was on top of my wind shield and my driver's side door is scratched and dented. There are no other visible damage, the door still closes, opens, and locks fine. The window is not cracked and is still working. My driver's side power mirror was torn off, but the mirror is not cracked or broken. There was no note or anything, the person who did it just took off. What I think happened was as he was driving he got too close to my parked car and scraped my car. According to the picture, how much do you think this repair will be and what needs to be done?

$100.... A gallon of bondo, a roll of duct tape, some sandpaper, 2 cans of red krylon, and about 7 hours of elbow grease. $130 if you want to invest in a couple cases of beer and invite some friends over and con them into doing it.
But in all seriousness, this is what I see....
Replace the mirror assembly ( Not likely to be cheap when purchased MSRP at your local dealership )
Completely disassemble the door to ensure no enternal damage- and allow access to repair the damage to the doors skin
Resurface the door, repaint, blend, etc -- Mind you this is going to be an expensive paint.
Retail... A good repair from a good shop .... Between 2K & 2500 ( more if there is any internal damage found inside the door ) . 1 day for tear down and inspection, 2-4 days for the parts to come in, 1 day to repair, 2 days to paint, re-assemble, and detail.
Retail from a friend moonlighting or a cheaper shop you could drop that by about a grand... but again, if there is anything else found enternally, the price goes up
Now as the former Insurance Adjustor this is what you should be doing....
1. File an incident report with the Police Dept that has jurisdiction for the place this happened if you havent already. If you end up filing a claim, your insurance company will most likely require/mandate that you do so anyways
2. Contact your Insurance Co. This is required even if you dont plan to file a claim per your policy contract. If you dont, and later when they do an audit for renewal they can ( and I saw it happen many times where I worked ) refuse to renew your policy. If you do file a claim this is going to be covered under either your Comprehensive or Uninsured Motorist Protection line. Your deductible would be whatever you selected for those lines.
If you file a claim...... My best guess is your looking at about a $1500 +/- $300 on the intial insurance estimate, and best guess is they will find other damage upon tearing down the door adding another $300-$600, plus your rental costs ( if you have it ) then you would be responsible for any deductible.
When it comes to insurance repairs... By law, you have the right to chose ANY repair shop of your choice. If you go with the Insurance Company`s shop they generally come with a lifetime warranty backed by the insurance company. This is good if you move a lot or just want the extra protection. i.e. you keep the car and 10 years from now the paint fades on the repaired area... The insurance company would repaint the door for free. etc

Thats sucks man, i feel for ya.
Which damage are you talking about... I see multiple areas of damage from the collection of photos you have.
For the door your are looking at around 1.5k.
For the rear bumper you are looking at around 1k.
Id say 3k total at the end of the day with labor and taxes.
P.S Just stumbled across this on your album...
You on the sauce bro?

can the driver's side mirror be glued back on or something? I don't care about the power mirror adjuster, I just want the mirror back on so I can see what's behind me.

Sorry to hear about this. People are idiots anymore. Hit and run is such a ridiculous thing to do.
I'm thinking the total cost to fix will be at least $1500. Red paint is crazy expensive. Throw in the labor to re-skin the door, prime, paint, clear - plus the parts & materials. Definitely not a cheap fix.

Comp doesn't cover when a vehicle hits you. It doesn't even cover when parked in a parking lot, a shopping cart is smashed into your car cracking your taillight and rear bumper filler. Those are considered collision claims. They would, of course, be covered by the collision coverage, but often folks carry a higher collision deductible than their comp deductible.
An example of a comp claim would be if your car was parked in your driveway and a storm blew your neighbor's patio furniture into your car causing damage.

Nope. My car has been hit twice in hit and run instances. (Parking lots while i wasn't there) The comp deductible is 250 and my insurance company is USAA. They were glad to cover the damages on both occasions.
My collision deductible is 500.
My collision deductible is 500.

Yep, Though Farm Bureau of Tennessee, 0 deductible covers everything as long as the car is not being driven. 0 on uninsured Motorist also as well as 0 on Glass.
I am going to say without looking at the book about $1500 +/- 300 if there is no other damage on the inside of the door.

What i said above was how my agent - a friend of 20+ years- explained it to me. Sounds like the comp vs collision issue may be somewhat at the discretion of the agent. But I'd think a comp claim would be less likely to adversely affect your rate than a collision claim.

Has similar damage on mine a couple months ago. Just not the mirror damage. Went through my insurance company (person didn't leave a note) and chose my repair shop.
Ended up costing $1200 to fix.
Won't effect your rates at all. It's covered under collision, assuming you have it.

Hindsight is always 20/20, when my last mustang was totaled by someone else I was definitely glad I got comprehensive / no fault, as well as rental car coverage. Good luck, whichever path you choose to go with!
