Help! Should I wait for the '11 V6 or get a '09 GT

First time poster long time reader. I really enjoy all the comments on this site.

I'm trying to weigh out all the options on waiting for the 2011 V6 or finding a used '09 GT. I will get an automatic in either one.

The invoice on what I want on the 2011 comes to $23,395 including D&D, the MSRP is $24,680. What is a realistic drive out price? I've talked to 3 dealers locally and they say they can't even order the 2011 yet.

What kind of price should I be able to get on a low mileage 2009 GT deluxe?

The car will most likely be driven daily. I have a 60 mile round trip commute. My wife only has a 3 mile round trip commute. I hear that the '11 should get 31 MPG highway. What should I expect out of the GT? I don't have a heavy foot.

I'm trying to figure out which will be the best in the long run. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Welcome!

I went with the '11 V6 because a) it gets better mileage and has similar HP numbers, b) It gets WAY better MPG than a pre-11 GT, and c) I was able to build exactly what I wanted. Previously my '99 'vette and my '05 CTS-V were both great performance cars but fuel economy was what you'd expect from them -- not great. Although on the highway both got 26 MPG and sometimes 27 MPG thanks to the 6 speed -- another big motivator for the '11 V6 Mustang. The auto does even better. Gas prices are going up (again) and if fuel economy IS a consideration, I'd go for the V6. The 5.0 is going to be an amazing car but for me, I'd just get myself into trouble with all that power OR simply not use all that power. Either way, it's a cost that has no benefit for me.

Mustang GT's tend to hold their value pretty well. A quick check at cars.com shows '09 Mustangs GT Premiums going for $27k all the way up to $39k. A good price on the first year of the redesign, '05, is in the mid teens. My guess is that as the 2011 starts to flood the market the 2010 will drop slightly based on all the powertrain improvements but the car will continue to maintain demand at the adjusted price point.

Some people (myself included) really like the new interiors that started with 2010.

Others don't care.

I like speed but between those two choices, I'd rather have the 2011 V6. It won't be quite as fast as a 2009 GT but it won't be far behind. The difference in fuel economy is substantial. Most importantly, the interior is much nicer, at least if you get the Premium package. The 2010 interior redo is what turned me around from "Mustangs, they're cool, but not for me" to "Hey, that's my future car".

I'd go for the 2011 V6. Yes, the 2009 GT will be a little faster, but the improvements in the 2010+ will more than make up for it.

Is a 2010 GT in the equation? If so, that may be a good compromise. You'll be able to find some very reasonably priced once the 2011 hit all dealers.

Before you go with the 2011, find another dealer. Order banks for 2011 Mustangs have been open since the Detroit show. Your dealers are just trying to push you into buying something off of their lot.

I had a few local dealers feed me that line of BS of not being able to take orders. Two changed their mind once I started to hang up and one might have genuinely been clueless.

I haven't had a Mustang since 1986. From what i've read, The 2010 and up Mustangs are much better than the 2009 and lower. Much better in every way.

Refinement - Goes to the 2011 3.7
Fuel Mileage - Goes to 3.7 (I get 19-20 mpg city and 26-31 mpg highway speed dependent in a 2007 GT M5 3.55 so it may not be as large a difference as you think).
Performance - Slight Edge to 2005-2009 GT. Im going to stand by that until I see a 3.7 go 13.2 Stock or 12.8 CAI/Tune.

An alternative... If you are willing to live with a cloth interior you can order a Paper Brochure for the 2010 Mustang from fordvehicles.com (comes with a $750 Extra Rebate Coupon inside) and should be able to pick up a left over 2010 Base GT for under $22,000.

PS If you will read my sig you should be able to tell the salesmen at the dealership were full of it. The order banks opened back in January and by March they had 11,000 orders for 2011's. The first privately owned production 2011 was just delivered to a forum member's mother.

PS If you do go for the 3.7 dont forget the 3.31 gears. I dont think any magazine has ever tested one with the standard 2.73's.

A local dealer just quoted me a price of $19,900 plus tax for a 2009 GT with low miles. Right now I'm leaning towards waiting for the 2011.

Thanks for all the input. I value all the advice. Please keep it coming.

Hmmm...if fuel mileage is a concern, I would say wait on the 11 v6. The new engine seems like it will do rather well, and the car is no slouch in the need for speed dept. Besides the 11's look like a GT ! Will be hard to tell them apart now from a distance, or a pass by..

I have always like the styling on the 10's and up. The interior is a HUGE plus. Also the refinements made to the suspension goes a long way as well. Yes, I would say order a 11. I think you will be quite happy with it.

What part of the country are you in?

All those dealers that told you they can't order a 2011 are just flat-out lying to your face. Any place that will do that is a place to never do business with.

And the choice about 2011 V6 or 2009 GT is just the wrong way to go, you really should consider a 2010 GT as the choice instead of 2009. I have found quite a few 2010 GT premiums in the $25.5K to $26K range and you could probably talk that price down some.

I talked to another dealer today and he said they could order the 2011. He said they are expecting a shipment any day on them.

If you are going to do any mods you should just buy a 2009 GT. If you want a fun daily get the 2011 v6.
