Help..confused about gearing
So far I am just lurking on the forum, but I have just returned from Ford after test driving a 2012 5.0 automatic. It pulled well...but I was rather unimpressed with off-the-line acceleration. So, is this because of the 3:15's gearing on it??? ( I think that's what it had). If so, what options are there from Ford for other gearing...or is that what you get with the auto??

No optional gears from the factory for automatic 5.0L's, but that's not really the issue here. The 6 speed automatic features very steep 1st & 2nd gear ratios, so even a 3.15 ring & pinion is plenty. However, the factory tune has lazy throttle tip in plus torque management that keeps power at bay when launching. So, get an aftermarket tune for better throttle response & to eliminate the torque management. It'll feel like a completely different car! And, if that is not enough, get an aftermarket stall converter that flashes closer to 4,000 rpm's at wide open throttle. Circle D makes a great converter for the new automatics. A proper tune and a converter (assuming traction) could drop a full second off the 1/4 mile time vs stock.

My supercharged '07 GT (automatic) had a big stall converter and 4.10's. My '03 Mach 1 (manual) had 4.30's. I guess I'm a gear junky. However, with an automatic car there is more performance to be gained with a converter and tune, in my experience.
