Hard shift 1-2-3 and wrong oil??

OK my shift from 1-2 is getting very hard and clunky and also 2-3 although not as bad as 1-2 when the engine (tranny) is cold. After a little research, is the tranny filled with the wrong fluid?

If you look at the Ford service manual http://iihs.net/fsm/?dir=940&viewfil...%20Filling.pdf it states for the MT82 XT-M5-QS which is a full synthetic oil.

HOWEVER if you look at the hand book in the maintenance and specs page it shows to use XT-11-QDC which I found to also be a synthetic oil BUT states for dual clutch transmissions.

The following also shows the use of XT-M5-QS http://fcsdchemicalsandlubricants.co...f/mantrans.pdf

This is what I have also found. In the handbook the listed oil (XT-11-QDC) has (according to the handbook only) a Ford spec of WSD-M2C200-C - THIS IS WRONG this is the spec for XT-M5-QS http://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubricant...smission Fluid Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid&category=Transmission Fluid XT-11-QDC has a spec of WSS-M2C200-D2 so which one is it? My guess is the XT-M5-QS is what should be in it.

Will be going to dealers today about this issue because IF Ford is screwing up my tranny with the wrong oil I'd like it fixed and ASAP!!

Problem is not the fluid.

This problem has been hashed and re-hashed in all the Mustang forums and Ford is aware of it and working on a fix.

The fluid specified in the owners manual for the DCT is a straight 75W and the other spec is 75w90.

If the fix was as easy as that the Ford would have done it a long time ago.

But definitely get your car to the dealer so they can document that your car is one with a problem.

Quite a few of the cars with shifting problems have actually had pressure plate bolts that have come loose and sheared the locating pins off.

Just got back from the dealers. They agree something is not right whether it be the oil (correct or incorrect installed) and that there are questions to be asked about the hand book and the service manual.

They have noted the problems and sent info to Ford Canada too so it now has a "history" for the future. They won't do anything re: fluid change etc as this "could" affect any future warrenty issues.

Now just wait and see!

What is your built date ? I know this problem has been brought to Ford's attention by numerous dealerships across North America, so for sure they are aware of it and engineers are adressing the problem as we speak and will come up with a TSB as soon as they have a fix for it. Just be patient, a lot of us are experiencing this clunky 1-2 shift ( including myself) !

Yeah mine is rough in 1-2nd when its cold out. Otherwise it's fine. I already had my transmission, clutch replaced in September and my build date was 5/10. So the new tranny should have been golden. I'm assuming everyone would experience this rough shifting in cold temps.

I've had my 1-2 clunky shift problem since leaving the dealership back in June.

I wouldn't say that mine clunks but rather it's hard to get into 2nd gear and sometimes 3rd. It makes that rough noise like it's forced into it.

Just out of curiosity, what prompted them to replace your transmission? It must of been severe for them to replace it. I will be honest I had this issue as well with the 1-2 shift. My situation seemed to be clunky due to the actual mechanism. I find if I shift with my fingers wrapped around the passenger side of the shifter I do not have the problem. If I grip the biatch from the top like a fist I have the issue almost every time. I have owned 5 mustangs of varying years and this one is by FAR the tightest as far as gate goes to shift. Christ the other ones had so much slop while in gear it was ridiculos. To me this tranny is a little finacky like the tko was but in different ways.

My shifter is a bit finicky when it's cold (and by cold I mean freezing), same sort of thing, though I'm getting to where most of the time I can shift it clean without an issue even while cold. There's some technique to it that I'm still developing. Occasionally though I've had it flat refuse to go into 2nd. Once it warms up though it's perfectly fine. Anyway, if Ford ever comes up with something for this I might even consider going for it.

My 2nd gear wouldn't stay in place when I first took delivery of my car. It's like, it wasn't there.

Mine was built 5/10 and the 1 -> 2 shift is a little "clunky" when cold, but fine when warmed up. I have skip shift tuned out, and just like a previous poster I have noticed when I grip the shifter like a pistol grip and put a little force towards the drivers side during the shift it is much smoother.

People in other forums have had actual grinding of the gears with the clutch fully depressed. I have not had this, just the aforementioned "clunkiness". The moment I have actual grinding I will take it to the dealer but until then it seems a slightly rough shift when cold is normal.

Same problem here, but only when it is cold out. After 10 minutes it's golden.

TSB 12/20/10

just brought my car in Yesterday for the same issue..

Very rough shifting in cold weather. sometimes locked out of gears all together.. ..

As of 12/20/10 there is a TSB out that ford knows about issue and is working on a solution.. at this time there is NO FIX, DO NOT CHANGE OR ADD ANY FRICTION MODIFIERS as this can void your warrenty..

i have the OASIS sheet and read it..

I have a question.

How in the hell could they (Ford) void the warranty if the transmission oil is replaced with the recommended oil?

The first problem seems to be nobody truly seems 100% on which oil this should be.If anyone has a definitive answer on this I would like to know.

Since Ford themselves seem a little confused about which oil is to be used.

I understand not adding friction modifier & that this could void the warranty.

I'm thinking that if Ford printed 2 different recommendations in 2 different publications & 1 of them isn't right & you replaced the oil following this recommendation.WHO WOULD BE AT FAULT?

Does anyone know if these 2 different oils are somehow the exact same thing?

The DCT oil is 75W, the other oil is 75w90.

Why would you want to replace the oil yourself while it is under warranty and there is no recommended change interval?

If you are having the hard shifting problem then just make sure it is documented at the dealer and drive it until Ford comes up with a definitive plan to repair it.

Sure as hell don't want to put that junk in there, way lighter weight than either of the Ford spec fluids. Okay for TREMEC transmissions maybe but not the MT82.

I just got a reply back from my dealer with copies of the emails from Ford.

My car does have the right oil in it XT-M5-QS which is the one listed in the shop manual and the owners handbook is wrong.

HOWEVER Ford also say that engineering is possibly looking at replacing the XT-M5-QS oil with XT-11-QDC as used in Fiesta etc but not to do anything regarding oils etc until a solution has been found per SSM21661 below

Special Service Message: 21661 2011 Mustang - MT82 Cold Shift Effort
Some 2011 Mustang vehicles equipped with a MT82 6-speed manual transmission may exhibit increased shift efforts in cold ambient temperatures. This is usually most noticeable in 1st and 2nd gears but may also be noticed in 3rd through 6th gears. Engineering is investigating this concern and no repairs are recommended at this time. The use of friction modifiers or other fluid additives is not recommended since although they may provide some immediate improvement in cold shift effort. They are likely to result in long term degradation of the synchronizers.
Effective Date 12/20/2010.
