GMs getting nervous

So it seems that the new 3.7 V6 has brought so much to the table that Chevy has decided to come out with a whole new engine for the Camaro. I find this so funny because it still won't help.

I dont see how another 20hp is gonna help the cars weight issue

Drop some weight and put in that engine, then we'll talk.

Now if ONLY they put that much effort into the LS3, imagine what that would do. Of course, it would also cost 50k.

Any guesses for the cost with the new motor?

I'm sure the Ford 3.5/3.7 V6 has more than a few "tricks left up its sleeve". GM/Chevy should resign itself and the Camaro to always being second fiddle to the Mustang and be more worried about how the upcoming Focus will slaughter the Cruze.

I agree with -Adam- Competition is good. But they're just trying to win a horsepower race and most intelligent buyers realize that a few more hp doesn't always make the car better.

Well the Camaro did outsell the Mustang the past year and a half...it's good that GM is doing incremental upgrades to their lineup. Of course, the pent up demand had something to do with that, but the Mustang will still be quicker if this hp rating is true...

The Camaro's big (no pun intended) problem is that it's not a Camaro, it's a Holstein. They need to worry less about HP and more about weight and size.

I hope the interior refresh mentioned is a good one; the current Camaro interior is vomit-inducing.

That article and post is all pure speculation, no solid HP numbers or even that it is for sure going to happen.

A bit of massaging and upgrading to Direct Injection would add 20-30HP with ease...

With EASE my friend. Fact of the matter is, people are seeing as much as 40 lb/ft gains in torque at the wheels with just an intake on the 3.7, not even a tune. JLT's dyno graph had me about to run to the bathroom, it's absolutely crazy.

There is a ton of potential in the 3.7.

I guess it must cost less to develop a new engine than to take a few hundred pounds out of the car?

The GM V6 is already a great engine, the car just need to go on a diet like the other guys already said.

Yeah it's all speculation, but still fun.

One big reason Gm is working on that engine so hard possibly is to go in the Silverado. The F series with the 3.7 just murders it in every possible category. The 4.3 is a boat anchor these days. Gm needs to figure out how to lose weight. Adding power is the easy part these days.

I doubt we'll see a 20 HP jump unless GM bumps the compression ratio to 11.7. Otherwise, I think its just bigger injectors for E85. If you do the math, the 3.6 would make 324 HP and 267 TQ if they perfectly scaled the engine up from 3.0 to 3.6 liters. I'd honestly stick with the current numbers for the 3.6 if this is true.

A change to direct injection alone would be worth a solid chunk of power. Perhaps this will cause Ford to respond with their own direct injection? Time will tell, but as was said above, competition is good for everyone. Now if only Ford would stick an Ecoboost V6 into the Mustang...

As I said on Jalopnik, if it has an X, it should have a Turbo attached to it.

Somebody should come out with a turbo kit for the current 3.7 V6, real soon I hope . . . would love to see what that would do.

I'm not sure if we are getting confused between the Ford and GM engines, but the GM V6 in the Camaro already has Direct Injection, right?
