It could be the Ford Mustang of the future.

It could be the Ford Mustang of the future. A concept developed by Fabrizio Giugiaro, Co-Chairman and Styling Director of Italdesign Giugiaro Spa, as a remake of Ford’s “pony car”, entirely carried out in virtual mode, orange painted and unique in the world.

The Ford Mustang by Giugiaro is the second experience of the famous Italian designer among the icons of the American auto industry. The previous had been the Chevrolet Corvette Moray, launched in March 2003 with great success. This particular car, taken from the popular sports concept invented by Lee Iacocca in 1964, was an idea laying in Fabrizio Giugiaro’s mind for some time. At the beginning of 2005 he already discussed it with J. Mays, group vice president of Design and Chief Creative Officer of Ford Motor Company, who accepted the proposal.

The first preview took place in Pebble Beach the same year and the official unveiling was at the 2006 LA Auto Show. Distinctive features of the Mustang by Giugiaro concept are the scissor doors, hinged at the base of upright A pillar, with a vertical automatic opening and electrically operated, the typical Italian exceeding wheel arches, the single curved glass panel bridging the windshield and rear window towards an almost non existing tail and the cameras instead of the rear-mirrors. The engine is a 4.6-liter V-8, now supercharged by a Whipple/Ford Racing blower that enhances up to 500 HP and is coupled with a mechanical 5-gear transmission.

Which is why I still say that a lot of cues will be used in the 2010

Exactly! People need to stop stressing about parts of the Giugiaro they don't like and be enthusiastic about the freaking awesome stuff it has!

This car looks sooooooooooooooooooooo much better in the metal than in any photographs I've seen. I got the chance to get up close with it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed back in July.

The weakest aspect is the nose. A little too 6-series BMW. Give it a more agressive "hooded" nose and it'll look great. The hips on that thing are so cool it hurts and the rear is pretty cool too, although I'd have concave rear lights like the '67/'68.

As for the interior, lose the horse hair and the shifter and the rest is gorgeous. Now THAT's a center stack worth having!

So, what, the 2010 Mustang will essentially be a re-skinned version of the current Mustang with, I'm assuming, some upgrades (added refinement, IRS...). And an ALL-NEW Mustang will be arriving in 2013...? Is that close to current speculation?

Based on Ford's history (and 90% of all the cars out there) I'd say your right on target.

Depending.
The 2010 to the 2005 will be like the 99 to the 98

With the new global platform coming though, I'd say the all-new Mustang won't be till 014, 015...especially if the 2010 is hot...

The 2005 still turns heads in its 4th year... more people love the look than hate it.
