Probably the way it tucks in and not have as much bulbous look to the side panels/trunk/rear/hood.

With sharper angles and more cuts, it'll look smaller...but its just an eyetrick
Kinda like how the black panels on the bottom of the V6/GT500 create the illiusion and it look sleeker and not as large.

Chrysler used the same trick on the Challenger. I expect GM to do the same.

It will be interesting to see how small the 2014 redesigned Mustang will be with the new GRWD platform.

It will probably look great. But if you look at the history of the mustang when we had and oil - gas problem in the past (1973) the first thing Ford did was to re-tool their products and market them as gas savers. Lets hope we do not go through that era again.

The upcoming 400 HP, 5.0L, DI engine is supposed to be a gas saver compared to the current 4.6 3V.

I, for one, will not complain if they talk up a 400-horse for being more efficient.

"Overall, the Challenger is 10.1 inches longer and 1.8 inches wider than the 2008 Mustang."

Personally, i would like a smaller mustang the "looks" bigger. Now don't hate just yet.

By smaller i mean reducing the mustang in non benificial areas. The increase in size for the current was both good and bad for me. the additional leg and shoulder room are great as is the head room, but the overhangs are horrible, and the overall height (not headroom) is just way to tall.

So smaller, in front and rear overhangs, and lower height via engineering (ride height, seat design, cross brace design, etc).

After the vehicle is smaller it can be made to appear very muscular. (look at the Saturn Sky for example, while i don't like the vehicle it looks much larger then it is). Adding more fender/qtr bulge, using the light position to make the vehicle appear wider, lower appearing roofline makes the vehicle appear both longer and wider.

Lets get real. If they are trying to make it look fuel economical, people look at the sticker and data, not at the size when cross shopping.

just my thoughts

I thought the article was stupid. I was actually hoping that the article was going to be about the 2014 Redesign.
I too think the Mustang should be lower & wider.

I have been saying for years they need to reduce the size of the car by like 2% in every dimension. Lighten the car up. I knew there was no way they were going to pull it off on the next refresh and would need a major refresh. But i like to here this as i am one person who has always been turned off by the bulkyness look of the current stang.

I'd like to see the next generation Mustang reduced to the original '65-66 dimensions and stay that size in the future. But if the next gen is based on the rumored GRWD chassis which also has to be the basis for the Falcon sedan, then I don't know if that's possible.
