Ford techs...

So i really dig the guys at SAN TAN Ford... however i am skeptical i used to work as a mechanic and if I had the right tools i wouldn't take it in.

However i just caught a ford guy tight my oil drain bolt on the pan with a torque gun? Really... I hate that!!

I enjoy when they tight it by hand, not some torque and on top of that the screw looks like its a little bent.

Why not complain, I can't see any reason they should use a torque gun, unless they set it 10 pounds or something like that.

Provided they had the gun set at 16 lb/ft, it's ok but I know what you mean! DIY baby.

Ford Techs & Toyota

I agree with your post. Took our Toyota Venza to our local Toyota dealer for brake work. Service adviser calls me to tells me we should also change air filter since it was not the "right one". Also suggested doing the fuel system flush for injector cleaning etc. I told him NO!.

I personally put the air cleaner in myself not more than a year ago. It was not a Toyota but Purolator made for the car. Car just turned 32K and no signs of bad idle or mileage being off.

They did the brake work okay. However, I always open up the hood to check things out. The TECH left the air cleaner top latches off and it was hanging off the lower half. Also had to clean off the grease on the front seat and threshold area.

I just love paying these dealers the big bucks they get for this type of work.

So it is not just the Ford Techs.

I always hated taking my BMW to get the "free" services done. I always ended up buffing all the dang swirl marks out of my paint for a whole afternoon after the car wash monkeys had their way with my paint. Thanks for the courtesy. I am always lurking around the bays when my car gets anything done. I would complain. That way the next guy who comes along has a lesser chance of getting the same treatment.

I had 'free' dealer oil changes for my '10. They were the only people that had ever touched that drain plug... so when they told me it was stripped and I needed to buy a new one I was taken aback. I had to fuss quite a bit before they agreed to eat the $9 or whatever the cost was for the replacement.

Followed my wife home after brake work on her Mazda 3 last year, at a dealership. She complains of noise. I check and all 20 lug nuts are on finger tight. Needless to say, I was pretty upset and we didn't pay for that kind of labour.

I realize there are BAD stories out there but everyone has bad experience with just about anything...I have 2 brothers that are Ford mechanics. They really know what they are doing. One of them is SVT certified and handles all performance stuff (very rarely come in). Point is there are good and bad workers no matter where you go. Plus the majority of mechanics rush every job because they are paid by the job. Example brake job might pay 4 hours if it takes you 5 hours your paid 4 or it could only take you an hour. Also, from my experience most dealers have horrible shop equipment. Key is find someone you know

What sucks is that after the oil change, my car smelled like oil burning only to find out that they spill oil on my pan and the bar that holds the lower part ( lower brace bar ).... I hate it!!! Question is, for $29 every 5K is it worth going to ford for a 100 point inspection? I got free oil changes for a year of 15K whichever comes first. I rather change my own oil...
