Few underhood mods done
Few underhood mods done
Recently just did 2 quick easy mods under the hood. Installed passenger and driver side JLT black billet oil separators. Also did the sound tube delete. MUCH better and the oil separators look cool.
Before I get bashed for wasting money on a driver side oil separator, I got the pair for $150, plenty worth the extra $30 IMO. Here's some iphone pics:

JC... I LOVE those red covers. Too bad that won't work with my Kona, or I'd do it... lol. Did you paint yourself?
As for the JLT's, can you please elaborate on the purpose of these? Necessary reliability mod??? And how easy was the install?
The sound tube delete always intrigues me. Why? I keep thinking about doing this, but I keep going back to, it sounds fine inside the cabin. Does it sound BETTER in the cabin with this mod? Am curious...
Mods look great nonetheless bro... love it.

sound tube is rice.. no need to hear video game sounding nonsense from a hole in my firewall
I'm curious about the oil separators too; I've never seen them talked about on my previous boards (ExplorerForum and Mazda6Club), so just wondering why they're so great? And if so great, why doesn't the factory put them in?
There's a big thing on personal opinions of oil separators and why have them and why factory doesnt install. And why oil going back into your AIR intake is harmful or harmless. Arguments for both sides. All I can't say is in about 20 miles of driving i checked it and was able to pour oil out of it. Not much at all but enough to pour out.
Price - I got them from someone on a forum for that deal. Not bad at all.
The red covers, I love the way they looked on another car. Sprayed them and came out too orange looking. redid in universal red hi temp engine paint rustoleum. What a pain to spray without getting defects and run marks. They really have a TON of flaws in them. I actually taped off the lines on the center of them. I just forgot to pull the tape out, so I need to do that, so there will be 2 black lines to add some mix.
I'll probably end up buying the boss ones when I good deal comes by.
And thanks for the compliments

^ thanks for info man. So the JLT's purpose is just that, to separate the oil going back into the intake...well, preventing it from doing so, right? Interesting. So it's essentially a "reliability" mod? non-performance oriented.
As for the Boss covers, I would like those too... but aren't they like 100 bucks or so, and only come in blue?

Yeah, u can find them new for 72.99 I believe and yes only blue. I may try repainting again. Oh and installing them the paint tends to get nicked.
Yes the oil separators are not performance based.

Much better looking and less cluttered under the hood. Personally I hear less of a wind/humming noise in the cabin now. But I am very very very keen and **** with sounds.

Well, BMW DOES install them from the factory.
That's part of the reason why an M3 costs $25,000 more than a GT. haha
I have an oil separator, you guys would be surprised how much oil it catches. All that oil gets dumped back in the intake which lowers octane rating and gums up intake valves.
So, it's kinda both.

But yes, please post pics, close up too.

Very interesting. Thanks for enlightening me about oil separators. So about how much oil per 1000 miles, let's say, does it catch? So if the oil separator was not there in the first place, does that oil get lost anyways? or does it get recirculated? I guess what I'm getting at is, does the use of an oil separator actually REDUCE the total amount of oil in the engine, over time??? Because, it is caught in that container, and (I assume) dumped/recycled by the owner?????? I would think that if the oil separators caught, say 1 qt total, over 1000 miles or something like that, that can't be good right??? in terms of oil consumption??? I don't want my car running on 7 qts of oil versus 8.
