Maybe you're only considering the time frame since the latest Camaro hit the road... Okay, Mustang hasn't won that too much. Still, overall this isn't even close.

Besides prior overall sales results mean nothing except bragging rights and frankly if current Mustangs are selling in volumes high enough to make them profitable even being king of the sales heap is of negligable value.
Now when the nexstang shows up thats when you want it to sell like crazy and blow the F-body and Challenger away since the real value in doing so is getting those amortized costs taken care of ASAP. The faster that happens the faster Ford starts making real good money and they can afford to do things like the Bullitt, the Mach, the Boss and so on or improve components on the car like the engine or the interior or whatever.
Had the first gen S-197 not sold as well as it did, the improved interior and improved powertrains that Mustang is enjoying right now might not have shown up until the 2015 model.

Had that been the case, the nextang would have shown up in '10, and I'd be robbed of my ability to own one of the last production years of what I consider to be the most attractive, aggressive, appropriate looking Mustangs since the 60's and early 70's.
But your point is taken, and probably illustrated by what I've said. I may hate the new design more than warm beer, but I hope it sells better than any other design because it means Ford will have reason to keep investing in it. I was unlucky enough to be born in '73, which means I didn't get to drive the real muscle cars when they were born. This current crop is bringing that back, and I hope the genre is able to hang on a little better this time around. Muscle cars, at least to me, are a reason to wake up in the morning. They're part of what makes being human so rewarding.
