Our first '11 V6 Mustang has the huge slash-cut exhaust tips with no inner pipe. Looks very mean ...

That was a misprint.

Kev, when you get a chance, can you look under your car and see what the letters on the muffler tape say? There should be a three letter code, black letters on white tape, it will be near the front end of the muffler.

Can anyone else with the visible inner pipe do the same?

I don't see a running change for V6 mufflers on the fordparts.com site.

Here is an example, see the 'SVT'?

Well, there appears to be no logic as which muffler assy's are being put on which cars ... this is a Pony pkg. w/ MT built 4/08 and big 1-pc tips (same basic config. as OP's car, but he's got the 2-pc tips).

Maybe Ford's got two different muffler assy. suppliers and they just make them slightly different.

EDIT ... Oops, I now see that Kev's car has the big tips too ... maybe it IS a Manual Transmission thing ??

Seems a bit far-fetched but could it be A/T vs M/T?

My big tipped mufflers both have a big "D" on that tape.

Just to confirm, the D is on the white tape and not the blue one as seen in the picture, correct?
(I'm only asking because I hadn't seen a single-letter code on the mufflers before)

See pic ... I'd say the tape is more silver than white !!

Just stopped by my dealer and they have TWO '11 V6's on the lot ...

Red Candy Base Coupe with A/T & 101A built 5/17 ... has the 2-pc tips and a big letter "C" on the tape.

Red Candy Prem Coupe with M/T, 202A, & Comf Pkg built 5/18 ... has the big 1-pc tips like mine.

Got to be A/T vs. M/T.

Anyone have an M/T and the 2-pc tips or A/T with the 1-pc tips to prove this theory wrong ??

Another intersting thing about that "Base" car, is it had the 225 wide BFG Radial T/A's on it (s/b M/T only, A/T should get the 215 wide Michelin Energy Savers).

I think you've nailed it with the A/T vs M/T.

That's it. My V-6 Automatic, Premium with the Pony Package has a 'C' with the double pipe from the muffler.

I wonder why the difference just because of the transmissions?

I have to go back to the dealer and check, as I seem to remember their Pony Pack Auto car having the chrome tips, but I could be wrong. I know there are a few on here, so I'll wait for them to chime in. But the Auto/Manual thing sounds true. Also, I believe their Base Auto had the 225s too. Who knows wth Ford is doing.

I just noticed in the Brilliant Silver thread that the 2010 V6 Ford unveiled with the 2010 Mustangs had Brick Red interior and painted mirror caps, so Ford changes stuff left and right.

Maybe this will help. It looks like the base, prem and MCA models get the stainless steel, and the Pony Pkg. gets the chrome tips. If I'm reading this right . The pony package is the only one that mentions anything about different exhaust.

V6 Coupe and Convertible — Standard model
• Exhaust — stainless steel dual

V6 Premium Coupe and Convertible —

Option Group 202A

• V6 Pony Package

– Lower bodyside “Mustang”
tape stripe
– Rear decklid spoiler

– 18" polished aluminum wheels

– Body-color exterior mirror caps
(943; NA with 203A)
– Unique Pony grille with

chrome corral

– Fog lamps

– Pony fender badges

– Chrome exhaust tip

– Auto On/Off headlamps

– Premium floor mats with
embroidered Pony logo

Guess it IS manual vs auto. And wow those inner pipes are puny. If I get a V6, it will be getting a full 2.5" catback pre-delivery.

Must be diff on Man vs. Auto, all S197 GT's have different mufflers on man & auto, the manuals are a little louder

Are these technical writers idiots or do they think the readers are ... tips are not CHROME, they are lightly brushed and polished 304 S.S. The 2-pc tips are also lightly brushed and polished 304 S.S. and no different between the Base V6 A/T and the Pony/MCA V6 A/T tips that I've seen.

"Chrome" is a plating used as a surface treatment on plain steel that if not properly maintained will eventually pit, flake, and peel ... allowing the base metal to rust and get ugly.
vs.
"304 S.S." is a non magnetic metal that is highly resistant to corrosion without any special surface treatment. It can be emory clothed by hand or machine and left that way for a dull "brushed look", or you can polish it up on a buffing wheel and get a highly polished "chrome" look. Or you can do a combo of the two (emory cloth then buffing) to get the look of the '11 V6 tips.

Ok, so far we've seen

AT -> "C" with the 2 piece tip
MT -> "D" with the nicer 1 piece tip

"D" mufflers seen on Canadian non MCA, and US Pony Pack and MCA models.

Anyone with a US base MT car?

As mentioned a few posts back, my dealer has an MT Pony 202A pkg. with the "D" muffler assy's.
