Do you think it's bad to hit the rev limiter cutoff?

I finally broke in my brand new 2014 GT MT last night for the first time. I just bought her 5 weeks ago & she has 500 mi.

It was the first time I floored it and I didn't expect her to accelerate that quickly and while I was paying attention to the road instead of the tac I redlined and felt the engine cut off temporarily. This stunned me briefly because I wasn't expecting it and would have shifted around 6800 if I had noticed.

I know it's a safety feature hence it shouldn't be harmful. However, I'm still concerned that it was damaging.

So, how often have you hit the fuel cut-off line and is it harmful?

Nahh, I wouldn't worry about it. Like you mentioned, it is a safety to limit it there, but I think the computer does it with spark, not fuel. We have some different internals, but keep in mind that some guys put a Boss intake on and have a tuner increase the limiter.

No harm will be done from occasionally bouncing off the rev limiter while in gear.

Why would it be damaging if its a safety feature?

Need reassurance huh.
Ford has to warantee these engines... if rev limiter was damaging could you imagine how many engines ford would be replacing?

It's there to let you know you still haven't learned where to shift with your ears yet. Good to hear you are enjoying your new car.

Agreed! Better to keep yer eyes on the road than beneath the wheel. Eventually your ears will tell you

That was the bad thing about driving "quite" cars all my life. When i got in the mustang i was shifting at 4k RPM because compared to what i was used to, it sounded like the engine would blow.

Now with GT500s and resonators deleted... I find any excuse i can to bump it up to 6K RPM.

I have hit the limiter a few times as well. The tach will also turn bright red at night if you did not know! I have found with stock exhaust it is hard to drive by ear. Never paid attention to any tach on any manual I have driven. But this engine winds up so quickly and so high it is surprising. Just too quiet for me too pin point the shifts by ear. Need the GT500 axle backs I guess!

Agreed, I can't hear it well either. However, as for the red light- I don't have the premium . I only have the base which you get nada, no light for you!

Watch what happens when you practice powershifting lol. It won't hurt anything.

Lol... I think I've reached cut off quite a few times. Just goes to show I have a lot to learn in timing it just right during power shifts.

Power shifts are the best. Bang the clutch and watch her go.

I know, that is skipping a few lessons ahead for me at this point. I'm still getting comfortable with choosing the right gears for the speed I'm going lol.

Are you a German native or in the military? I bet the Mustang is an exotic car over there!!

What Mr. Wilson failed to mention is that he was racing next to me (I have 3:73s) and he got a good spanking...

worse still, mine is a 2011 V6.

How do you like them apples?

the engine can easily spin to 8k, so 6800 isn't much to worry about.

Have heard the same - I'd be interested to see what kind of testing Ford did to high RPM's and what others have done with raising the rev limiter and driving very hard.

Have seen the Boss's rev to ~8500... I'd probably take mine to 7500-7600 redline if I pick up a Boss intake manifold... in time, I think 420hp will be just fine for a while.
