Delivered 3/22/13, impressions after 850 miles

So I picked up my car last Friday, just in time for my busiest week this year. It's an Oxford White 400A with Track Pack, Recaros, and Rear View Camera. I put about 850 miles on this car this week alone.

I love this thing. The steering is great, I love laying into the throttle, I love the way it looks and drives. However, I have noticed a few things..

1. At 65mph, I have a high pitch howl (whoooooooooooooo) in my left ear that goes away by 70mph. It only happens under load though. If I get out of the throttle, it disappears. I'm not sure it actually goes away or if the exhaust noise is just covering it. I'm probably going to bring the car in for that. The steep gearing I can deal with, but not being able to cruise at 65mph is a real bite in the ***. I've been turning the radio up or just driving 60 or 70, but I'd like to be able to drive 65, as that's how fast most of the highway traffic in my area moves. It only comes from the left side, so I'm thinking wheel bearing. People on SVTP suggested ring and pinion, but I'm not sure why that noise would come from one side only. My girlfriend can hear it, but not nearly as loud as it is from my seat.

2. Speaking of exhaust noise, 3.73s is a bit steep for my purposes. Cruising at 80mph at 2500rpm is great for highway throttle response, but feels a little more high strung that I'd like for long distance cruising. Also, I find myself shifting from 1-3 because it shortens up the lower gears so much. Not a deal breaker, but I'd probably be better served with 3.55s. Maybe at some point down the line, but I really doubt it's worth it.

3. That Torsen must be pretty damned tight, or the AdvanceTrac is just working overtime. I've noticed on a number of tight right hand turns and a few lefts at intersections that the inside tire will start chattering. That may also be the Pirellis in sub-50* weather. We'll see once it starts warming up some more, which I certainly can't wait for.

4. These Recaros. Oh man. I love these seatbacks. They're phenomenal and fit my large frame perfectly. The seat bottoms, however, I've had to get used to. I'm 6ft, 280 and I carry most of my weight in my thighs. I've pretty much gotten over it now, but for my first few days, my left leg was cramping up because the bolster would dig in to my thigh when my foot was on the dead pedal. If I could move the dead pedal and the clutch 2 inches to the right, my left leg would sit straighter and things would be golden. I've adjusted my seating position now so that my knee bends up, not out, and takes some of the pressure off the bolster. All this says to me, though, is that I really need to lose some weight. These seats are phenomenal and simply not one-size-fits-all. Still not regretting my purchase.

5. The suspension is softer than I expected. It handles nicely and is well planted in steady state cornering, but the body does move a lot in quick transitions, both side to side and fore-aft. I especially noticed that tonight chasing down a couple of friends on the way to dinner. The headlight cutoff pitched up and down a significant amount. I'm thinking about suspension at some point down the line, but I that's a pricey proposition to do right and I'd rather not ruin the decent ride that the car has now.

6. That lower rear valence needs to be blacked out immediately. I'd like to, at some point, do a 2013 GT500 setup on the car, but that'll have to wait for quite some time. For now, I just want to make that area black. It's so busy down there, especially with the stark white against the black plastic and red reflectors, that it looks like the car is missing a trim piece or something.

For all these things, I still love this car. I put a white Barton shift **** and adapter on the car at the dealership before I even started it for the first time and I have never had a problem shifting it. 3rd is a little notchy in the cold, but 5 minutes of driving and the trans is smooth as butter. And I love blipping the throttle coming down the gears when I'm braking for an exit or a turn. WOT throttle shift from 2-3 is fine. Absolutely no hangup. I just let the centering spring do the work. I was originally planning a Barton Two Post bracket, but I may not even do that now. The brake pedal has a lot of travel in it, but that's fine. The car feels better when you grab it by the scruff and toss it around, and it's somewhat fitting that I need to get deeper into the pedal to get those Brembos to bite hard.

What are your plans for the valence? I was planing on plasti-dipping mine the moment it gets home. Its probably one of the few things that will get dipped on my car because I'm not a fan of the finish of plasti-dip.

How much is the Boss/CS valence? Same as the GT500 ish?

I love mine. The chirping is the Extreme Summer tires in sub 50 weather. Once the weather is in the 80's and the tires warm up take some corners and see what happens. Put it in Sport Mode and try it too. Much different. You can feel the car pull itself around the corner.

Definitely get the sound checked out. I haven't heard of this issue yet. Maybe Deysha can chime in. Give her your info and she will get you taken care of. Search for her on the member listing.

Happy driving.

I quess I don't get the Hype on the plastic dip, maybe someone can Q-me in, if you don't like it why do it. Most people with Harleys paint the black molded parts. I believe Painted looks better anyway, and really the extra cost of the painting is worth it in my mind.

The high pitched whoooooooooooooo maybe the side window lovers if you have them, I've heard some people say they buffit the wind some. I can't see it being a wheel bearing or ring and pinion, I'd rule out the wheel bearing it would make noise and increase with the speed.

3.73s are a bit steep, cruising at 80mph at 2500rpm is high for the highway 3.55s would be better. You may want to still change them out.
I'm guessing, but I thought they came with stiffer springs with the track pack, I maybe wrong. I've heard others say they have to soft of a ride and have changed out the springs.
I think your car is a Gt, and not a GT500. If it's a GT I think it comes with a Torsen but Limited-slip, I maybe wrong on that to.

The tires will most definitely improve with warmer weather

Thanks. I figured it was mostly temp. Never had an LSD car do that to me before though. It's almost like I'm driving around with a spool sometimes.

I haven't had the time or weather to plastidip mine yet, but I'll be doing that and the fender badges at the same time. I don't know how much the Boss valence is, but I don't want to spend twice when I know my ultimate goal is the GT500 axleback.

It's not permanent. I wish it were gloss black too, but for parts that nobody will ever look closely at, like the rear valence, it's ideal. On a Harley, everything is a part that people look closely at. Bikes are so small that you are drawn to every detail.

The noise is only under load. It disappears if I get out of the throttle.

It's certainly stiffer than a standard GT. The non-TP cars I test drove floated pretty badly, like there was a cloud between the car and the wheels. Regular GTs and GT500s both get Traction-Lok LSDs. GT500 Performance Pack and GT Track Pack cars get Torsen LSDs.

One more reason I need it to get warm.

The "whooooooing" I believe is either the trans or the rear.

It could be the factory Cold Air Intake with the sound tube that you are hearing as well. The Whoooooooshing is common.

What makes me think it's the rear is that it happens at the same pitch at in 5th or 6th gear. I'm sure it'll happen in 4th too, but the exhaust would probably cover it.

Should've upgraded to the Shaker Pro with the subwoofer. That'll solve you hearing the whoooooooooo, but I'm sure Horton is out of luck.

I went with 3.55s. It's right where you're describing you want it to be.. The best compromise imo. If you spend a lot of time on the interstate or driving 100+ like I do you might want to change.

3. That Torsen must be pretty damned tight, or the AdvanceTrac is just working overtime. I've noticed on a number of tight right hand turns and a few lefts at intersections that the inside tire will start chattering. That may also be the Pirellis in sub-50* weather. These tires suck. When I put Nittos on my last mustang it was a huge improvement. They were nothing short of amazing. I'm currently running the Pirellis on this car and hate it, but new tires are not a priority at this time.

4. These Recaros. Oh man. I love these seatbacks. They're phenomenal and fit my large frame perfectly. The seat bottoms, however, I've had to get used to. I'm 6ft, 280 and I carry most of my weight in my thighs. These seats are phenomenal and simply not one-size-fits-all. Still not regretting my purchase.

If you lose some weight you'll not only be more comfortable, but your car will go faster too..

It's so busy down there, especially with the stark white against the black plastic and red reflectors, that it looks like the car is missing a trim piece or something.

DivaDanielle put a post somewhere that shows how to get all of the parts for the gt500 exhaust and diffuser at a great price

The car feels better when you grab it by the scruff and toss it around, and it's somewhat fitting that I need to get deeper into the pedal to get those Brembos to bite hard.
Glad overall you're enjoying the car.

It probably is, I said trans because apparently Ford went with a less viscose fluid to help with cold weather shifting but then it transmits noise, but most likely is the rear since you also have a Torsen and 3.73's.

If you have an aftermarket CAI then it might be that as well then. Either way enjoy the new car.

I get the high pitched "Wooooooooo" too, but I just tell her to calm down. The car needs to stretch it's legs from time to time.

I think what you hearing there buddy is the fake tube that goes from intake to the cabin to give you that cold air intake feeling? maybe?

It's not. I deleted that the first day. It's coming from behind me and it's a mechanical high pitched wooooo, not a whistling.

Hey lsxjunkie,

You should bring your vehicle to your Ford dealership and make sure nothing else is going on. Please make an appointment and PM me with your VIN, dealer, mileage, full name, and best daytime number so I can escalate this to the customer service manager for your area.

Definitely get the sound checked out. I haven't heard of this issue yet. Maybe Deysha can chime in. Give her your info and she will get you taken care of. Search for her on the member listing.

Happy driving.
Thanks for the mention, Stevedotmil!
