Red face Decisions Decisions.....

Got a call from my dad yesterday and he wants to by my current car. He'll just take over the payments since its a 0% loan and has 24 months of the 72 left.

So now i'm in a strange spot because my original plan was to keep my current car (Pontiac G6) for another year and buying a Mustang GT. Then i'd have an option to keep the G6 since I wouldn't owe much on it. It would also give me time to save a few more bucks for a down payment even though I have enough now to be comfortable with the monthly payment.

So i either hand the keys to my dad now and order a new GT or wait a year and possibly keep both cars.

"Dad, enjoy your new G6."

That Pontiac will only depreciate more. And your enjoyment with the Mustang will start the day you get it.

GM was hurting.....BAD. So I jumped all over it since I needed to get out of my Grand Prix lease asap.

Plus my awesome credit probably helped a little too

I want to keep the G6 because:

(a) Even though we don't get bad winters, it would be nice to have a reliable extra car around for any snowstorms. My GF has a Lexus IS350 which is worthless in the snow. We have an old Honda Passport but I don't trust driving that to work (70 mile roundtrip).

(b) My GF's daughter is going to be 16 in March of next year. She has the Honda Passport she can use, but I really don't trust that thing for much longer. The G6 (which still has a warranty until '12) would be a perfect car for her to use.

(c) I just want a 2nd car

So if i'm set on keeping the G6, then I'll have to wait at least a year so i can pay some more of it off until then.

0% is not very hard to get depending on the manufacturer. Don't even need "awesome credit". Honda and Toyota will reguarly grant 0% to Tier II and Tier III, especially if you are an existing lease/finance customer.

I'd dump the G6 while you have an interested party, and get the Mustang. I grew up in Maryland right over the GW bridge, and with the exception of the occasional oddball snowstorm in the past few years, winters are very tame. JMO, of course, and best of luck with whatever you decide.

Sounds like you've made up your mind.

And I hate to sound callous (and single) but as long as the GF is a GF and not a DW, why is it YOUR problem what she drives? I mean other than sleeping on the couch, living in the dog house, etc.

Seems pretty clear to me...if she breaks down, who do you think she's going to call? If she wrecks in the snow, again, who is she going to call? Simple concept.

My experience with snow storms is that its not so much the storm that is the problem... its that some cities aren't equipped to deal with it! Here, we will get 12 inches overnight and never realize because the plows were out all night plowing it away, and its never a problem. Ive been in places where 3 inches shuts down the whole city.

about the car.... its up to you. decide what your goal is, then take the necessary steps to accomplish that goal.

My GF and I have a 3 y/o daughter and we live together. We are pretty much married minus the vows/ring. Luckily I landed a woman who doesn't see a need to get married because "What does a ring and ceremony change? If we are committed to one another, the ring and vows are worthless".

So when purchasing a car I have to take into account my situation which includes what my GF drives.
