Dealer just overfilled oil.

Took the car in for some 5W30 synthetic. Driving home I see they put 7 quarts in instead of 6. I had a coupon so they just charged me a flat rate. Should I be concerned? Level is reading around 1/4 above hash marks.

If you're concerned you can always drain a small portion.

However, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. It's pretty common to run an extra quart when you're auto-crossing or road racing. The heads hold a ton of oil in them and it helps keep the oil pickup submerged during hard cornering.

Even for normal driving it's probably not going to do anything more than possibly lower your mileage a bit.

sounds like a good way to make a big mess

Dan, I'm curious -- why did you go with 5W30?

Saleen recommends that weight after S/C install.

You are missing the fact I have a 2010 with a 4.6.

Depends which car he's actually talking about. Looks like he has a 2010 and a 2011

Whoops. I saw the "2011 gt/cs....." and failed to read that it was only the front valance.

This is what this wait for my car is doing to me. I'm going crazy!

My bad........

Was actually gonna say you're missing some oil. But you should be good to go with just that much more in your 4.6. Don't sweat it.

Only difference between the 5w20 and 5w30 is the cold weight. Once the engine is at operating temperature both have the same viscosity.

Correct. One could go crazy researching the correct weighting of oil for their car and application. Since my 4.6 is run only in the summer I run 5w30 synthetic not the reccommended 5w20. However, I would definitely run the 5w20 otherwise.
For some reason my last two oil changes at the dealership ended over filled according to the dipstick reading. IMO the reading should be right on. So I rolled back in and they made it right as they should have in the first place.

Not only overfilled but now I see my filter covered in road grime! Like it wasn't changed! Did they really use synthetic like I paid for?

My dealership has a "Fastlane" which is for oil changes only. So I see what's happening. Terrible thing not to trust the dealership or any mechanic for that matter. If you are not sure on what they did or did not do get a second opinion and follow though if there is a legitimate concern. Gotta keep these guys honest.

if they didn't change filter...kinda defeats point of change

why not just do it yourself? pretty basic stuff,a oil change.

I have multiple vehicles. Classic car I change myself. Motorcycle I change myself. 2009 Jeep with lifetime drivetrain I let dealer do for $20. Save me the hassle and is on maintenance record.
Mustang is pain to change. Need ramps, gotta remove the lower shields on 2010+ cars. Takes 6 qts. I figured let somebody else deal with it.

I'm at dealer now. Mechanic says he changed filter. I guess he had really dirty hands! The are gonna change filter again and lower oil level. Never going to this dealer again.

What you should've done before they replaced another filter is make your own marking on it, that way you know if they changed the filter... =]

Unless they're wise/stupid enough to clean it off....
