Clunking noise when stopping - Help please

I'm having a problem and wondering if anyone knows what I could be experiencing.

When I'm slowing down I sometimes hear a clunking noise when hitting the brakes. It doesn't happen all the time. Usually only when there is some momentum before I come to a stop, like when there is weight transfer to the front. This problem didn't start until after I installed my new shocks/struts, steeda sports, steeda strut mounts, and adjustable panhard bar.

I'm not sure if it's a major problem or not, the car seems to be driving ok. I haven't gotten aligned yet so not sure if that could be part of the problem or not. I read somewhere that when people do lower control arms that the stiffer bushing transmit the noise from the two piece driveshaft and that can be heard at low speeds sometimes. Not sure if this may be my issue too, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does it happen with clutch in/out? Have you checked torque on the strut mounts, sway bar endlinks (notorious for loosening) and the LCAs?

Do you also have a one piece driveshaft? Mine does this and I suspect it's the driveshaft.

It would appear not, but that's just speculation....

It happens with the clutch in or out. I will check the bolts on the mounts and end links. Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

I don't have a one piece drive shaft. I thought maybe that's what it could be too, but I'll eliminate everything that I can before dropping the money on one of those right now.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Well I doubt it if you don't have one....

Just kidding, playing on the phrasing and all...

Seriously though, also check the spare tire and jack, if they've been moved at all they can clunk around on braking.

Hi Adam and All,

I know it has been over 3 years since this post was first initiated but I have exactly the same problem now with my 2012 automatic transmission mustang. I went to to the dealer since the car is still under warranty and they changed worn bushings in the differential but the sound is still there as I come to stop and although it does not rock the car in a way to move it but you can feel a push and shake from rear side.

Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I've had it for years on my 2012. Never bothered me enough to deal with the stealership though. I initially thought it was brakes. It's not. I now think it's the DS. I'm going with a one piece.

Hi Troy,

It is just disturbing the smooth drive at the moment, and I am afraid to have problems in future, and want to get it fixed as the car is still under warranty. I will get them check the Drive Shaft. I also thought it is brakes or the discs but it seems that it is not...
