Can a key remote be programmed for a different car?

Hey guys,

My 12 Gt was totaled back in December. I kept one of the keys. Now that I have a 13 on the way and if the ignition system is the same, can a key be reprogrammed for a different car? Obviously the actual metal would need to be recut for my specific ignition.

You can try, I am betting yes. We had a clicker from a 2003 mustang that I programmed to my car to lock and unlock.

1st. Stick key in ignition with doors closed and turn to accessory on and off 8-10 times (can't remember exactly)

The locks will act as if they are possessed, and go up and down. Then hold the unlock button down. If successful, they will lock and unlock again. Then turn key off and your done.

Sweet! Since you have your 13 before me, you're the guinea pig! Hehe. Now I wonder how I can get a new key blade. I heard these clickers are stupidly expensive so I'm glad I kept at least one. Shoulda pocketed the other before they towed my 12 away...

Unless Ford changed their fob and (or) frequencies, all 4 Button Fobs should work for all Ford OEM cars and trucks. I recall the minimum model year is 2000 and up as long as it's the OEM keyless entry. I have my GF's 08 Fusion 4-Button Key with the Fob built in synced with my 07 GT and vice versa with my Fob to her Fusion. The only downside to this is that when she pops true trunk near my car it will pop my trunk as well as hers as will her locking and unlocking the car near mine. I'll bet money your fob will work with your new Mustang as long as it's the 4 button.

That great. Thanks for the reassurance Pete! Yes it is the 4 button key. Anyone know where I can get a blank insert?

Do I program it like 2011GT/CS said?

I think I will get a flip key off of ebay and program it and the remote.

I don't see why dealerships charge so much to turn the key a few times.

Turn the key on and off 10 times in your ignition total with the 10th turn key resting on the "on" positions you have to do it in quick succession and turn the key far enough for your "dummy lights" to turn on. Your door locks will cycle on and off signaling you are in the "program mode". Once there you can press any button on the fob you are wanting to program and the locks will cycle again indicating the fob is now programmed. MOST IMPORTANT: You have to make sure that each time you add a fob, you reactivate the previous fobs you programmed from prior. I made the huge mistake of not reprogramming my gf's fob to my car after resyncing my factory fob to my Mustang GT. This occurred right before a date we were supposed to go on but luckily Triple A showed up a half hour after I did this genius stunt and the car was on when I locked myself out. Remember the 10 quick turns, arrive at on, and resync your fob every time you throw a new one in. I think you can program up to 10 or 20 fobs, it's online if you want to search for it but I think you only care about the extra "one" anyway, right?

For key blanks, hit up EBay for a cheap source and be certain the seller is reliable. Make sure the key you're buying has the control chip in it. If you already have had 2 keys programmed to your Mustang (not sure if you are getting 2 with your new mustang or not) then you can simply get a locksmith of hardware store to cut your key and program it yourself. I believe the directions for doing this are definitely online but I've yet to do it so I can't tell you the ins or outs of it. Remember; 2 existing keys have to have been programmed to the car or it won't work. The funny thing is; all of the Ford keys with child are actually interchangeable, you just have to take the actual key with the "butt" of it (chip part) out and cut the key to your ignition. This is why the 2000 and newer Ford Escape keys with the fobs built in can be used for 2006+ model year mustangs I believe. The switchblade keys are awesome and I have been looking at one of those for sometime but have some other upgrades in mind first.

What the OP seems to be looking for is a new metal key blade to insert into the old key FOB head. Not sure this is possible. Is the key blade removable from the head of the Ford key? Might talk to a locksmith and see.

pretty sure you can get a blank insert.. the one from my '06 is a separate fob & key, i just bought and extra key (w/ chip) on ebay for $9 and had it cut at the hardware store. yeah it tells you how to program it in the owners manual..

The '12 key/FOB is one item, not a separate key and FOB like the 05-09's are. I believe he needs the actual metal blade from a '12 key to insert into the '12 key top which has the built in FOB.
