blue smoke on start-up

Yesterday I got a bunch of blue smoke from the exhaust right after start-up. It cleared up pretty quick, within the time that the engine was on high idle.

A few hours before that I had started the car and moved it from the driveway out into the street without giving it time to really warm up. So maybe there was some oil or condensation that hadn't burned off from that.

It has only happened once so far (that I noticed -- but I probably would have noticed, since I usually do notice stuff like that). Car is 2010 GT, just under 8,000 miles.

Has anyone else noticed this; is it something I should have checked out?

thanks!

(yes I tried searching before posting! )

blue smoke is NEVER normal.. Steam(white smoke) is on a cold start up but blue means burning oil.

You need to take it to the dealer. Blue smoke is never a good thing.

This is a 2010, and as such still has a warranty. Take it back to the dealer and have them fix it.

Of course, you'll be without your baby for a little while, but it's better than having bigger issues later.

What the OP described is 100% totally NORMAL, whether any of you want to hear it or not. If you start the car briefly, then shut it off, some oily residue from the car's PCV system pools in the intake track. Upon the next start up this oily crud burns off as blue smoke quickly. I've seen all forms of modular engines do exactly this over the years in brand new vehicles - 4.6L's, 5.4L's, GT SuperCars, Terminators, etc. They are all prone to do it. Again, 100% totally NORMAL.

Ditto. Five Oh is on target. Had a 2003 Terminator that did it, on occasion. Especially after a short start-up and then a later one. Don't be worried. Just keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or constant, then I would take it in. Had 68K on the Terminator when I sold it and no oil useage issues.

thanks everybody --

I had a feeling this might be the story . . . it has only done it once, and I'm not sure I want to reproduce it by doing the same thing again . . . but will keep an eye on it, and check for carbon like Charliehorse suggested when I get a chance.

I had this same problem with my 2008 Bullitt. running only a few seconds after start up resulted in some blue smoke. This forum actually gave me the answer as to why it was happening

My 2003 5.4 in my F150 did it for 7 years with no noticeable oil usage, unless you ran Mobile 1 in it.

So it's an old thread...
...but my 2009 would do this occasionally and I was put at ease by others who reported the same thing. It's totally normal.

If it's smoking at any time other than start up I would see the dealer.

Agreed, it happens, I've had it occur on my pushrod 5.0 and both my 2 and 3v 4.6's. Can't rember the 4v doing it? But the difference may be in the fact that the 5.0 and 2v/3v engines were NA and the 4v is FI. Seems to me this has something to do with oil getting in the PCV system and pooling further down in the intake tract.

My '07 GT Vert would do that ever time I started it and moved a short distance and shut it off. The next start would blow blue smoke. Something about the shortness of the running time. I have seen several do it....Ford found no issues with mine and said it was normal under those conditions. If it does it at every start, then there are issues.
