2010 V6 Conv. 24k miles
Every week I wash the engine bay of my car, nothing too crazy just take a sponge and wipe down the inner fender, under the hood, cowl area etc.
Tonight I looked at my battery and the engine side of the bag is just about gone. I go to grab it and it just falls a part in my hands. I'm like WTF. I'll call the dealership tomorrow, but being the weekend they will probably say call back/ come in on monday.
Has anyone else seen this?
Searching now for TSB's.
If anyone has any info, I would be grateful.

Acid Leak?

 

You should be sprinkling some baking soda from time to time to neutralize the acid on the top & outside (not in/near the cells) of the battery (and blanket).

 

I don't think it's acid related- my hood being dark (kona Blue) the under hood temps are all ways hot. You can drive the car and stop at a light and see that hazy heat rising off of it.
It started deteriorating at the top so if was acid I would think it would be at the bottom- just my thought. Going to go over to the dealership in the AM.
I searched high and low and cannot find a TSB.

I believe that acid is from fumes (and perhaps a splash or two while driving) from the cells at the top. The sides and bottom are completely sealed.

 

Yeah your right, don't know why I was thinking it would be on the bottom.

 

Wow, thats weird. I wash down my engine compartment every week to two weeks with a pressure washer and no problems with the battery bag or the hood liner.

 

Thats something I expect to see on cars a few years old or older. I see battery insulation covers fall apart all the time from acid contamination and just dry rot.

However it should not be happening already on a 2010 car! More than likely the battery has overheated boiling over acid that spilled onto that side. I would not worry it should be covered under warranty. Most cars end up without these insulation covers eventually anyway.

Sorry cannot find the stupid battery charger for my camera, blackberry phones suck at taking pictures.
Went to the dealership and sure enough wasn't able to have anyone take a look at it.

Pulled the battery this afternoon and washed down the battery and tray with soapy water, before I reinstalled I sprinkled baking soda in the bag. Going back monday and will keep you posted.

 

I noticed the paint peeling on the firewall behind the battery. I took it by the dealership body shop and the manager touched it up. It looked like battery acid had splashed on the paint.

 

The whole idea of batter "bag" is insane. What are they saving here? I almost threw up when I saw that.. including the underside of the wheel wells... some type of carpet under there. It's all just cheesy.

 

I think its to keep some of the heat off the battery??

 

Sounds like its time for an Optima Red Top after the dealer replaces the bag.

 

That's my guess, thermal insulation.

 

My 2014 is doing the same thing with the battery blanket at just over 36K miles. No acid anywhere. Wondering if the heat from the manifold is the culprit, but from what I've read the blanket is supposed to protect the battery from the heat

 

They're not expensive or hard to replace.
I bought a new one on eBay.

 

Little critters (mice) were after mine last year.
