Bama tune or dyno tune
#4
Do you know of a really good tuner that you trust?
If not, think about it this way, Bama has thousands of their tunes in cars. How many people come onto these boards saying an engine has blown with a Bama tune? Virtually nobody.
So just remember to look at more than just cost or so-called "performance", but also their track record. I'm sure that the Bama tune is probably a bit more conservative than many tunes out there, but I trust their experience on this personally.

What are you being quoted for a dyno tune? The OTS tune may be a bit cheaper, but a custom one is just that, custom. I'd guess you could get a bit more power and could tune out things like rear O2 sensors if you have no cats for example.
Depends what you want out of the car I'd say.

My custom dyno tune with box is 750, I have BBK long tubes, BBK x-pipe, JLT carbon cold air intake and flowmaster outlaws. Not looking for a race/ track car. Just looking for a GT that would kill stock GT's on the road and one that sounds like a beast.

If you're not looking to race and your 5.0 is your DD then go bama. No need to squeeze every oz of power if your aren't racing and are just seeking some more power with great reliability. If you ever run into a problem, which is highly unlikely, you can just datalog and they will send you revisions. Also, if you ever add something you can just tell bama and they will further revise the tune. Just my .02

For every Bama Tune we ask you 19 questions about your specific Mustang, including your unique mods and style of driving. This info helps us write custom tunes from the ground-up for your Mustang's mods that will give you the most horsepower that we can safely deliver. We're also constantly developing our tunes! Between our 14 different Project Mustangs and tons of street/track and dyno testing (on our in-house Dynojet 224xLC), we're looking for any minor tweaks to be made that can benefit you guys. We're also part of Fords Technology Transfer Program & Work very closely with Ford to insure that all of our tunes are perfect!
Please let me know if you have any questions or need some assistance in the near future! Our Bama Performance tuning specialists are here in the building Monday-Friday from 9AM-5:30PM EST and Saturday 9AM-5:30PM EST. You can hit them up directly at 888.226.9764 and they'll get you squared away!

Unfortunately I already made the decision for the dyno tune. I wish I knew more before making the choice but its my wife's uncles shop who is doing it so I got guilted into choosing him. I have my fingers crossed that all goes well though.

A dyno tune will almost always be better than a generic canned tune. Canned is just cheaper and arrives at your door.

Take a look at VMP tuning, my advice is to go with a company whos primary expertise lies in tuning. Going thru a company like VMP you have the opportunity to learn a little more plus you'll find many of these tuners...like VMP offer free revisions.
I read that if you're not racing and just DDing to not worry about getting all the HP available well.... if you're satisfied with mediocre I would agree with that.
I've had plenty of customers switch to VMP and be completely surprised that their previous tune was nowhere near as powerful and efficient.
Give us a shout if you would like to sit down and chat about it. We are here to help give you the best advice and customer service we can while also teaching and helping you learn more on the capabilities of these cars. Hope this helps. Call me anytime.

Update: so as of Wednesday the 27th my car is still in the shop and the mechanic told me yesterday that the previous owner had a tune in the car already and it's blocking them from doing anything new with the computer I guess. Is this even possible? Or do you think they don't have the right technology and there blaming it on the previous owner? I hear that the shop only does imports so that makes me extremely nervous

If the existing tune changed maps and map locations it could be more difficult to tune I would guess. But I would think a shop could reload the OEM tune and go from there?

Bama is good to start with while you add parts to your car, When your done get a dyno tune, Bama is safe but to take full advantage of you mods YOU NEED A DYNO TUNE.
That's what I'm doing, I use bama right now as I mod my car and them I will get it dyno tune, Which is in a couple weeks.
