Unhappy Bad day yesterday....

Yesterday was the funeral for a very close friend who I lost in a car accident (just so happens he was in a Mustang). I'm in Michigan for the service and staying with my sister.

As i'm walking into my sisters house my 4 y/o niece says "Uncle RedWings your car is rolling".

I look back and sure enough my car is rolling slowly in the driveway. Forgot the parking brake.

I couldn't get to it in time and it rolled into my sisters garage door. The good news is I only have really minor damage. Just the tip of the bumper has some paint scraped off. There was a big white scuff mark on the hood from the paint on the garage door but I was able to rub that out.

Garage door will probably need to be replaced

Sorry to hear about your loss.

The car and garage can be fixed. Take care of yourself and your friends family first.

Stay strong.

The one funny thing to all of this is when I was 18, I ran my Jeep into the garage of the guy who passed away. Almost knocked his whole garage down. Obviously this was a message.

His mother got a kick out of the story.

Sorry to hear about your friend. One of life's "suckiest" lessons is that we all die. In the last three years I've lost my mother (cancer), father (cancer) and a 4 friends. Bad few years. I hope your friends passing was as painless as possible and that his friends and family were able share their love with him.

I guess in the end, a good death is the best we can hope for.

Back in 1986 I stopped at an Exxon in my then-new CRX-Si to fuel up a 1-gallon gas can. I stopped next to the pump, got out, set the can on the ground and, facing away from the car, began flilling it. After a few moments i looked behind me to see that my new CRX had rolled backwards toward a busy 6-lane road (didn't set my parking brake either)!

Fortunately one side of the car ran up on some landscape curbing, which saved it from wandering into 45-mph traffic. Embarrassed but unscathed, I pulled it back up to the pump, got my gas and got outta there. Ever since, the mental scar from that little event has consistently reminded me to set my brake. I was lucky.

Sorry about your loss, man.

Sorry to hear about your loss. The bumper and door are minor in the scope of life.

When I was a kid about 13 or so I used to always go out and start the car in the morning. Cars have always been in my blood and I was driving way before 16. You could get away with it way back then. Anyway, Dad had a 67 Galaxy 500 with a 390 and 3 on the tree. Fired her up and set the parking brake and back inside I went since it was very cold. Those of you remember back in those days you had to set the choke and they would run at a very high idle until you punched the gas pedal to kick them down.

Anywho, I went inside for 5 or 6 minutes and decided to step back outside and I found the car across the street in the neighbors yard with the back end up over their porch. Our driveway was kinda hilly and the brake didnt hold it for what ever reason. My first thought was oh dear God its hit the house! I ran across the street and got in as quick as I could put it in gear and got it back to the driveway pronto before Dad found out. Made sure I got the brake set good this time also. My heart was beating a million miles an hour. The funny part was seeing all the steam coming from the exhaust pipe fogging up the neighbors door and that car running at a very high idle speed and they claimed they never heard it.

I can only imagine what others thought as they drove by seeing Dads car in the front yard of the neighbors. Nobody ever ratted me out thank goodness.

Very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend and the damage to your car. I know it's been a really bad summer for myself as well. My wife and I have been to 9 funerals this summer including my Father and my uncle (my fathers brother). It's been a very very hard summer.

This is why I leave my car in gear, because I know that one day I'll forget to set the brake.
