Auto trans fluid check question

The manual says to have the fluid checked every time you get the oil changed but then also states it does not need to be checked unless you are having trans problems.

Which is correct?

My reason for asking is I want to make sure when I get the ford esp warranty they can't deny me fixes because I did not have the dealer check the trans fluid if I end up doing my own oil changes/maintainance at home

Won't find a "conventional" dip stick if it's an automatic. For some reason, Ford decided to not include one that the average Joe could use to check.

My 2007 Charger didn't have a dipstick either. (At least... not under the hood.)

There was a procedure on the forums on how to use a long zip-tie, but you also need to know the trans. temp and use a conversion chart, etc. The dealers have to verify the fluid level with the StarScan too. Good Grief!

I guess these "lifetime fills" are supposed to be practical. If you're leasing, one might not care. I believe in "old school" type maintenance, so having a sensible way of checking the fluids is important to me. I'm amazed with BMW that has chosen to remove the engine oil dipstick as well. They utilize a "oil fill" sending unit that triggers an alarm in the dash cluster when the oil gets low.

Don't know about you, but I know sensors can fail. It's already been reported that these sensors have failed and engine damage happened. If it's under warranty, then it's their dime.

I guess I should clear up I have no problem with checking the fluid. Same as the Vette which I check at home.

My question is do I need to with this car or should it only be checked if there is a problem? And of coarse does the dealer need to check it to remain warranty?

Hmmmmm, get this. There is 2 printings for the manual, the first printing says trans fluid gets checked every oil change ONLY if it has a dipstick (and obviously if there is a problem) However the second printing leaves out the whole dipstick line.

I'm going to follow the first printing instructions..... Seems like they just forgot to add the second line.

If it ain't leaking don't worry about it. If it leaks Ford will fix it under the drive train warranty. The auto Mustangs haven't had a tranny dipstick since 2005.
