Any Possibility of a Retractable Hardtop for the 2010+ Redesign?
Any Possibility of a Retractable Hardtop for the 2010+ Redesign?
Back in 2007, not too long after I took delivery of my 2007 GT Premium Vert that I had ordered, I got a survey from Ford about what I would like to see in the redesign. Several of their questions had to do with a Retractable Hardtop option. I for one would really like that option, but I haven't heard much comment on it since. What is the latest, any word?
I had to sell my beloved '07 when we transferred up here to Kodiak, AK (living on base, no garages, lots of ice and snow--I just couldn't do that to her). I am anxious about being able to order a new Steed in 2011 when I return to the lower 48, but I hope the Retractable Hardtop is on the option list.
Thanks!
Buster

Thanks for the link. That all sounds great, but the date on that was 03 MAR 2006, has anybody seen any spy shots of the retractable hardtop or has there been any more news that is more recent?
Thanks!
Thanks!
If a retractible hard top is offered, I would be all over that!
I love the "fastback" look of the current design but have always wanted a convertible, but I got a coupe this time around because I thought the current convertibles lost a lot of the design.
A hard to (or even T-top!) I would jump for.

I really liked the looks of my Vert, even with the top up, but a hartop convertible has some advantages. First, it is more secure, someone can't just put a knife through it to break in or vandalize your car. Second, it wouldn't require a boot, as the rear deck lid could seal down directly to the body. Thirdly, it is easier to keep the car clean, as you could wash and wax it just like a coupe, instead of having to treat the top to keep in beading. Fourth, IMHO it would look better than a true soft top, and finally, it would also add some ridgidity to the body more than the soft top does. Of course it would probably weight a little more than a soft top, unless they get crazy and use a composite or carbon fiber or something.
I am really suprised we have not heard more, it makes me think that maybe the hardtop convertible will not be available

Oh MAN! I was just thinking about this the othe day. Retractable hardtops are one of my favorite tech features on a car. I have ALWAYS wanted a retractable hardtop in a Mustang. I love love love the look of an agressive roof line but hate that all soft tops loose that look. Especially in a Mustang. That line is impossible to keep when it's broken up by ribs. Uhg! However, I've always liked the freedom that a convertable offers. If Ford offered the Mustang in a hardtop convertable, I would have to sell my bed and funiture to buy one! That would be the coolest feature since incar navigation. Or maybe sliced bread!!!
(Ford...listen to me! Build it and they will come)
I forgot to type about the 1995 Mustang Cobra Hardtop Convertable. Anyone know about this? It has been one of my favorite Mustangs ever. Ford offered it one year and in one color only on the Cobra model. They all have black paint and saddle leather interior and a 5sp Manual tranny with 17" premium wheels. There were only 499 ever made. I had a chance about three years ago to buy a mint condition one with less than 13K miles. They wanted 20 grand for it. Not a bad price considering the rarity, but a little to rich for my 18 year old blood. I would love to have that car, even now. I might still buy one some day down the road. Dunno

Likely won't see one for 2010, just going on the lack of info or spyshots. We could see it introduced during the cycle, Mazda demonstrated with the MX-5 that adding a power hardtop mid-cycle is doable. But at this point I think they likely shelved it until the next go round.
Unfortunatly, I agree. It's more probable to introduce it in the whole redesign versus a refresh. That way, when it's on the GRWD platform, it may (hopefully) couter balance some of the added weight that it will likely cost. Although I would love to see it on a 2012 Boss 302!!! Mmmm mmm mmm!!!
The mustang is a muscle car, and should remain a muscle car.....

I was sure hoping that Ford would get it figured out like Mazda did before then...
I don't see how a folding hardtop would make Mustang any less of a Muscle car (btw, technically it's a Pony car). If anything, it would look more "muscle" than a regular soft-top.
Its not so much a "figured it out" thing as a "resource allocation" thing. If Ford were in the black and feeling thrifty they'd likely do it. But they aren't, and they have to make tough decisions. The money saved from not doing the top could be helping to make Taurus, or Fusion, or Raptor, or just making the rest of Mustang that much better.

Kory, yes I'm familiar with the 1994-95 removable hardtop.
These removable hardtops were also available on all Mustangs, including base V-6 models. As a matter of fact, I still have a brochure of the 1994 Mustang that I saved, in which I'll post a couple of pics from with the removable hardtop.

Yes it is, which is why I mentioned the use of composites or carbon fiber to save weight. How's the weather up in north central KS by the way? I am originally from Burden in south central KS, and graduated from K-State in 1993. My Dad said the weather has been pretty warm for this time of the year down in Burden.
I don't think I've seen a 4-seater folding hardtop that doesn't have the "does my bum look big in this" syndrome. They're getting better all the time and Mazda (MX5) and Mercedes (SLK/SL) prove that it's possible to produce a good looking 2-seater folding hardtop.
However, if they could engineer it so these sort of looks could be guaranteed, then bring it on
I love the way it incorporates the classic early 60's coupe look.
