be aware that lugging the engine can cause pinging also; it can happen at low RPM's under heavy load -- so you don't want to be in a relatively high gear and give it a lot of throttle

"going easy" means keep the load on the engine light, stay in a slightly lower gear and keep the RPM's up just a little, but no heavy throttle and no high RPM's
