I believe the Boss and the Shelby have painted housings. It's rust city for the rest of us. Even though I know the flash rusting isn't a problem, I went under there, disassembled the suspension, and applied a couple coats of POR15.

When I run over some jerk, I don't want to hear them sniveling to everybody about my ugly rear end!

Oh man, if you own an F-150 you know surface rust.... The Wifey's Mustang looks great in comparison.

And the rear axles are usually rusty or at least partially so, when they are installed at the factory, reason being, is that the housings are stored outside before production.

Don't like it? Want a permanent fix? Just get some POR15 paint and crawl under there and get to work coating all those rusty parts.

Ditto on the POR15. Paint it once and be done.

Quick question, where did you place the jack? It almost looks like the tail end of the drive shaft??

I didn't lift it from there. Just moved it out of the way to paint.

Unless you have the car in a show, with mirrors underneath, who cares?

Unless your car is going to into a SEMA show or a Concours D'Elegance, I would not worry about it.

Im with you I can't understand why a car at any cost would have a rear end look like that from the factory, seriously if Ford can't afford a 5 dollar can of spray paint, id gladly pay 10 as an option. Its pathetic and there is no reasonable excuse for it.

One more to the "it's normal" consensus.

This alarmed me on my 2009... but this forum straightened me out. My 2011 has the exact same thing going on and I'm not losing any sleep over it.

The rust is a protective layer. No really it is..

Do a search on this topic on the forum and you will see this topic comes up every few months.

Don't be jealous of the Boss/Track Pack cars that have the painted axle either. After just over a year of daily driving the paint has started flaking off and the aluminum diff cover has oxidized like crazy.

That's terrible! What kind of wax/polish were you using?

Ha!
