What kind of gas is required for the 5.0L engine? Does it require premium?

 

REQUIRED? No, suggested....absolutely.

The car will run everyday for as long as you own the car on 87 and never hurt it, but to maximize your performance 92-93 is the way to go.

 

I noticed a difference the first tank I put in with 93.

 

The HP rating for the engine is stated as being with 91 octane fuel. I heard anything higher is basically a waste as there won't be any additional performance gain. I've always used at least 91 but have had to use 92/93 because that was the only premium available.

The only disadvantage with less than 91 is less HP.

 

Noticed a difference how? I don't drive mine hard, but I do make a spirited entance when I turn onto the highway twice a day. What might I expect to see for an extra 20c per gallon?

 

Tw advertised 412 is with 91+ octane. I believe you drop to about 400 with 87.

 

Anyone with a V6 used a higher octane than 87? I've only ever put Shell or Mobile 87 in mine. Has always run great with it.

 

i noticed it runs a little better with Mobile/Exxon, i only use 87.. not much you can do around here with 420hp that you can't do with 400

 

93 and I wouldn't use anything else

I would love to know where these stats come from using 91 gives you 420 hp, and 87 gives you 400 ....the Manuel says 420 hp and regular unleaded at 87 is required.....someone please point this to me where it's true.

I have used the odd fill up at 91 just because prices were lower and the only thing I noticed was, I did less mileage on the full tank by 30-45kms....and diving habits were the same.

Stop wasting your money on 91 just driving your car to the store.....spend the money on better food for yourself..you will live longer.

 

I use the premium out of habit, but everything I read and hear (including the dealership) says it's ok to run on the regular. Something about the car adjusting automatically to the different typ of gas. I'm heading up to Northern Maine tonight from Jersey, about a 12 hour drive, and I'll be running the regular. I'm cheap!!

 

When the 5.0 came out in 2011 Ford had it rated on their website as 402 (87 octane) and 412 (91 octane) since it went up to 420 (91 octane) its reasonable to assume 410 with 87 octane.

Ok,so it achieves 420 using premium....where does it say 410 or 405 on 87 ?

So, the same ratio for the V6 might apply? 305 HP if you use 93 octane?

I'm still sticking with the 87. It's running great with it. If it an't broke, don't mess with it.

 

Completely in your head - the 10 HP difference might be noticed on a stopwatch but not on the street. The only reason to use 91 would be if the fuel mileage improved enough to justify the extra cost, which it doesn't, based on my own pretty comprehensive tracking. And the only reason to use 93 is...I guess if you can't get 91 and refuse to use 87 or 89.
(The above is all assuming you are on the stock tune - if you've been tuned for 93, then of course you should use 93).
