3.55 or 3.73 gears?
3.55 or 3.73 gears?
Just installed the FRPP axlebacks and awaiting on delivery of my CAI and tuner which be followed up sometime shortly by some new gears. Two questions:
1. Which do you guys prefer and why?(I understand most will say 3.73 but I would like some opinions)
2. What exactly do I need to order from AM? (Do I need the bearing and install kit?)
Thanks guys!

If it's just a street driven car why not keep the 3:31's? If your going to track it on a regular basis you might want to skip the 3:73's as it seems a lot of guys are past redline. Just going by what i've read on here.

I went from 3.31's to 3.73's on my V6. Very happy with them. My dealer did the gears and replaced the bearing and seals. I bought the gears and bearing from American Muscle. My dealer told me we should replace the seals while everything was apart, i agreed. They had them (seals) in stock.

I have the stocks, didn't upgrade to the 3.31's from factory because I knew I was going to change them anyway. I am hoping the dealer will cover the work because I have a huge problem with something they tried to do without me noticing(not going to get into it) but it is the least they can do.
I test drove an auto with what I believe were the 3.31 gears. I've got a manual with the 3.73 gears (included with track package). The key difference I can tell is its quicker to get to redline. The acceleration might be a tad bit faster too. I daily drive my Mustang and have no regrets with the 3.73s.

Thanks for the explanation!
Seems like it costs you 2-3 MPG which is 10-15% of the overall. I'm fine with the 3.31s in my car, as I spent a lot more time driving it at normal speeds than drag racing it. I've done a track session with it at Road America and the 3.31s are definitely good on the track - 3rd and 4th gear almost all the way around worked great. So for a daily driver, I wouldn't upgrade the gears even if you gave me the option for free. Just my opinion though.

I am not much of a drag guy, more into track.. and will use this car for daily commute
I had the same question last month. I too had the stock 2.73 gears. I thought about 3.31 and 3.55 but the 3.73 were recommended. 3.31 would not be enough to justify the cost and 3.73 (from posts I read on this and other forums) would have cut too much highway fuel economy for my taste. I split the difference and went with 3.55.
The car is really more enjoyable to drive now and my gas mileage has actually improved in the city. I probably drive about 85% city / 15% highway.
It's much quicker at take off and will downshift easier on the interstate. It feels close to my 2007 GT. RPM's are slightly higher on the the interstate but not really noticeable otherwise.
I had a mechanic that runs his own shop (used to work for Ford) install them and he charged me $500. He supplied the bearing kit, gear oil, etc. I just dropped off the gears and the car. I would recommend Ford Racing gears. Some people reported problems with other brands.
I'm sure most people will recommend 3.73 but I'm very happy with the 3.55.
Good luck!
