2013 V6 Gear Ratios
2013 V6 Gear Ratios
Yesterday, I test drove a 2012 V6 Premuim, but ended up ordering a 2013 since my choice of color/options was not available on the 2012.
This morning I notice that the 3.31 gear ration that was standard on the 2012 is not an option on the 2013.
Is it worth upgrading to the 3.31`s ? Since I test drove a 2012 , will I find a significant differencde with the now standard 2.73 gears ?
Thanks in advance.

Unless i'm crazy....The 2.73 has been standard since 2011 on the V-6. Pay extra for the 3.31 gear ratio. At 60 mph the engine is still only doing around 1,735 rpm. I would have ordered the 3.55 gear ratio if they were offered as an option

What are your preferences? Do you want 32+ mpgs? Go with the stock 2.73 gears. I think the 3.31s are a great option for $400,which is what I got since I couldn't get a performance package model and got about 30mpg. I have since upgraded to 3.73s and couldn't be happier. I still get 28mpg on the highway as long as I stay under 75 mph.
Just for a rough order of magnitude, the 2.73s will get you about a 14 second quarter mile. The 3.31s will get you in the 13.7 second range. The 3.55s bring it down to around mid 13's and 3.73s will be about 13.2 seconds. I've seen lower times with drag radials.

At first I was a little disappointed I could only get the gears and not the PP. But as I've done my own thing to the car, it really doesn't make a difference anymore.
I think as far as Ford is concerned, offering the 3.31s only with the PP makes sense from a model discriminator and marketing perspective. I'm sure most people don't bother to buy just the gears and pass up on the PP. I wouldn't have but it was a happy compromise to get some of the performance I wanted at the price the dealer was willing to come down to.

I ordered every 2011/2012 Mustang V6 possible with 3.31 gears for our store. I wanted to be sure that customers felt good about choosing a V6 and that extra snap is a good way to help.
Thanks to everyone for your input. To elaborate a bit more , up in Canada the 3.31`s were part of the Pony Package on the 2012 model. For 2013 , Ford dropped it from the PP and has it as a stand alone option for the Premium coupe.
I dropped by the dealership today and had my order revised to include the 3.31`s .
