2012 Mustang to get SYNC AppLink
The 2012 Mustang will get SYNC AppLink, which will let you have voice control over apps stored on your smart phone:

What do you guys think? Would you guys use this feature?

thats awesome, eliminates the need for sirius
I hope it's an upgrade on the 2011 sync system and I wish that my Palm Pre was compatible...because I love my WebOS and would never want to use another operating system...this sucks lol

This will be available to download for those of us with '11s right? It said you could do it on the fiesta, I'd imagine its only a matter of time before you could on the stangs

This feature could be one of the most useful features. Apps are really useful. No matter what sync can do other than this, this feature alone would make it worth getting, if they do it right. I have a ton of apps on my droid. Using some of them while driving would be very nice. Making international phone calls from skype, or making Google voice phone calls, are just some of the many things that could be great, if they can get them to work on it.

I'd definitely use this every single day. Every day I drive my car I think to myself that integration with the apps in my phone would make this the PERFECT car. I figured they had to be working on something like this since it was the next logical step. Ford is staying one step ahead of their competition with tech in their cars...good job Ford!! Just make sure it's available for the 11's since the new version of synch is upgradeable.

According to the Ford Sync Forums, the app link system also requires specific hardware which is why the fiesta is the only vehicle to have it at the moment. I suspect us 2011 owners may need to buy a 2012 sync module.

I don't have navigation, but I have a 2010, and have control over pandora? I don't switch stations much and haven't tried that. But Changing to the next song I just hit the seek button. And that's on the Droid X and my Blackberry. Either work... Note, I didn't really read the article, just skimmed it.

This concerns me. I really like the Sync system but Ford must realize if they are going to get into the Electronics business they need to provide good firmware support for their products. Even setup the Sync system so that the electronics can be upgraded independently of buying a new car.

They've done a fairly good job keeping Sync up to date with some of the older models.
From a logistical standpoint, I don't see why the 2010 and 2011 would use a different model than the 2012. I expect all 2010+ models to get the Applink ability.

FYI - I was at the CES show in Las Vegas this past weekend, and visited the Ford booth (yes there was some car manufacturers there, including Ford and Audi). They had the new AppLink on demo and was running Pandora.
I stood in line and waited for the guy to be free, and told him I had a 2011 GT with Navi and asked if I could upgrade it via the syncmyride/USB upgrade. He said that they haven't investigated the possibility yet (which I found odd), but said he imagined there would be an announcement on it later. I asked if there was any new hardware in the machine that would be needed and he said there wasn't.
Near the AppLink on demo (basically it was a Navi unit pulled out of a car, running by itself) there was a sign that said "upgrade available on all Sync models". Hopefully that wasn't a typo or anything, and a sign that they DO plan on upgrading the pre-2012 models to AppLink.
PS. They had Ford commercials playing on a big screen in the background. Along with one of the F150 Raptor commercials on there, there was a 2011 Mustang GT commercial I've never seen before. Haven't seen it on TV, haven't seen it on YouTube. Hopefully it gets out and somebody posts it, cause it was really cool.
