2012 GT Rev Limiter?

Hi guys, long time.

I have this issue and I'm not sure if it's an issue or not. I had my car 5 years now. And yesterday it happened, first time in a while.

I was in a 'situation' coming off the on ramp and hit it hard. I'm not sure what the tach said but I was winding it out in second.

All of a sudden...baaawwwww. Engine cuts out for one or two seconds, car lurches. Then back.

This has happened a handful of times. First time I took it to dealer and had them look. They said they didn't find anything wrong with it.

I tried googling around for a mustang rev limit and engine cutting out but only thing maybe was try replacing the fuel pump sensor?

Or maybe it does kick off on the way to blowing the engine? I don't know but what do you think?

TIA...

yes that sounds like you probably hit the rev limiter -- I think it is 7,000 RPM?

if you want to try it again, watch the tach, I think it blinks red when you are getting close to redline

OK, thanks Bert.

I'll try that next time. I didn't think it had one but I guess it makes sense.

Sounds like the rev limiter to me. Also, the Advance Trac system is rather aggressive sometimes as well and can kill power at the wrong time.

Thanks guys. Speaking about the Advance Trac, when I do the double tap and turn both off it seems that the engine performs "better".

Seems to get a little peppier. I don't know if it affects the engine at all. I would think not but.

Or am I just imagining it?

I believe it only makes a difference if the system senses wheel spin or a skid, in which case it cuts power; pretty sure it does not affect the engine tuning in any way

I have a basically stock 2014 GT with the 6 speed MT82 trans that I bought new in '14 so I know exactly what has or hasn't been done to it.. I have a few suspension mods and the factory track key. The factory rev limiter hits at 6750-6800 rpm. I thought when I bought the car it was 7000 rpm since that's what all the car mags were saying. I didn't have it all that long when I found out they were wrong. Either the tach is reading slightly low [ possible tach lag ] or 6800 rpm really is the actual factory rev limit. I've made a real effort not to hit the limiter since then, especially since it's a "hard" limiter not a "soft" limiter like you can get with most aftermarket ignition systems. IMO hitting the limiter is never good for any engine, but hitting a hard limiter is especially hard on the engine's moving parts eg. oil pump gears and crank gears. Except for a few special circumstances I always drive with the traction and stability controls fully off ie. Advance Track Off.

I thought these cars had a "soft" limiter at around 6750 and a "hard" limiter at 7,000 but I could easily be wrong on that

also pretty sure it cuts ignition, does not cut fuel; so the engine is still getting fuel, oil and everything; to avoid any potential damage (cutting fuel could cause a lean condition which could be bad)

but still it sounds horrible so I avoid hitting the rev limiter if I can ... I have ridden the rev limiter on my 2010 a couple times, on a road track at the top of second gear when I was not in a good situation to grab third, with no damage; but I would not want to do it often or for long

So, in everyday driving, you are driving so hard that the stability control and traction control systems are impeding on your ability to drive the car? I very much doubt that. Unless you're one hell of a driver and you're on a track, that's a ridiculous notion.
