2011 Oil Change

Noticed on a Ford info packet to the dealer that the 2011 V-8 will have a cast oil pan with 8 quart capacity that allows for a 10,000 mile oil change frequency. Anybody heard this?

I have heard and read the same. BMW, and Mercedes go even longer sometimes 20k between changes so it sounds reasonable.

Since I only drive 6-7k a year I will do it once a year just to be safe.

Regardless, I'm changing at 5000 miles with synthetic. I don't even trust the BMW guys telling me that we have long change intervals.. heck, they don't even give you a dipstick anymore... and they say the tranni fluid is lifetime! I call BS.

10K is the max change interval. Depending on how you drive the oil change warning may come on much earlier.

My V-6 came with 'synthetic blend' motor oil from the factory. I'm going to change to 'full synthetic' at around 3,000 miles.

The V-6 (6 quarts) and V-8 (8 quarts) are good for 10,000 mile oil changes. I'm still going to do 3,000 mile oil changes.

From what i've read in my owners manual, the G.T. comes with 'full synthetic' motor oil from the factory.

don't waste your time or cash doing a 3k oil change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5k maybe but even ford engineers say 7500 mile oil changes. They know what they are talking about more than any of us will ever know.

+1 - Oil has come a LONG way since the days of the infamous 3k oil change intervals that all the quick lubes beat into all of our heads.

If it was mine - I would do the first change at a few thousand miles - then 5k to 7.5k after that - with motorcraft 5w20 semi syn - depending on how much I beat on it.

Exactly! Especially if you are using synthetic. I use the recommended Motorcraft oil and filter in all my Ford's. My lease car get 7500 miles changes and the cars I own get 5000 intervals. The 5000 is more for convienence of being able to remember when it's due. Plus I rotate tires at every oil change. Makes them live longer.

I did not know this. There are a million opinions on oil changes but I would probably change it at 1K then again at 5K and pretty much go by the oil life monitor down to around 25 percent left or so. It would be worth it to me to have an oil analysis done just to be sure to check the oil life monitor.

Now if Ford would just put real gauges in the cars I would have very little to complain about. These glorified idiots lights really tick me off. So how are you liking your new mustang David? Have many miles on it yet?

My BMW is 25k km's or 15k miles for the oil life monitor right after a change. I've never seen the monitor go backwards i.e. add mileage to the change, but I suppose it is possible if someone drives primarily on the highway for the oil life monitor to count down mileage slower than it's being put on because it works based on fuel consumption. Most of the guys on the BMW boards use a 7,500 or 5k mile interval, which sounds similar to a lot of guys here.

Who are you guys gonna trust??? The average car owner and/or the money grubbing Jiffy Lube shops? Or the engineers that built this car.

If the Ford engineers say 10,000, then change it at 10,000 miles.

More often? Yeah, Spend your time and money for the next guy. We hardly ever keep a car as long as we think we will. I wish I had some of the money back.

Actually they say up to 1 year and 10,000 miles according to the IOLM on these cars.
The IOLM has got to be better than simple Miles or Time which although simple are not very accurate.

Of the methods that apply to pretty much any car....

1. Oil Analysis
2. Dielectric testing (A tester that actually works is outside a hobbiest budget)
3. Gallons of Fuel Used
4. Hours
5. Miles
6. Blotter Test
7. Time

Yes if the IOLM lets you go that long before it says it needs changed. The 3.7L has the same max interval.

Out of curiosity Gene what does your OIM say these days? You are also one of the few guys with 3.55 gearss. I am sorry to trouble you but you have a car like I want. I thank you for any info.

You just have to remember that the 10k intervals is when you use a Motorcraft Filter and oil. MC oil is a synthetic blend and the MC filter is one of the best out there to use. If you are using the standard Jiffy-Lube crap oil & filter, then you will want to change more often.

I know my oil changes at 3,000 miles seem like over kill. My Mustang might sit for two or three days at a time. I've been disabled since 1992 and i live in the middle of town. Most of my drives are 8 to 10 mile round trips, to go shopping and things like that. Plus it takes me 8 to 9 months to put 3,000 miles on my car. These are the reasons why i change my oil every 3,000 miles.

Here's my two cents on why it's reasonable to change twice as often as other people:

If you drive your car like the average person, then, yes, follow the average guidelines for a change every 10k.

Say an average person's engine sees about 1.5k rpm on average throughout all of its miles. We'll say it needs a change every 10k miles.

What if you drive so aggressively that your engine sees 3k rpm on average? The amount of engine wear does not depend on miles. It depends on how many times your rotating parts rotate, and how many times your pistons move up and down (ok - and the load/stress on those parts, which only helps my point, so lets ignore it for now). So the person who has driven aggressively and kept their average rpm's at 3k rpm, will have twice as much engine wear - and I assume half as much oil life.

If you drive with the flow of traffic, like Ford engineers expect the average driver to, then yeah, change it every 10k miles. If you drive the snot out of your car every day, then you really should change your oil alot more frequently.

I have a old gmc truck and the oil has not been changed in it in about 2 years. lol It does have moblile 1 in it but I just dont drive it much. I bet I have not put 3000 miles on it a a couple of years. Its strickly used when I need a truck to haul or tow. I understand your stratagey though. I would be very interested to see what your oil life monitor says in say9 months or so.

Short trips are hard on cars. They get warmed up about the time you get to where you are going.

chevys, i'm lovin the V-6. I have a coupon for a free (synthetic blend) oil and filter change from my dealer. It expires on Thursday. I'm going to have my oil changed today with only 500 miles on my Mustang LOL!!! I was going to wait until 900 miles but i can't let the coupon expire.
