in the 2014 they need to trim the car down in weight to help that city mileage number.

They did a great job, but would still like to see that city number closer to the highway one.

Mustang V6 also closely matches the Genesis Coupe's 210 HP 2.0 Turbo's 21/30 MT & 20/29 AT. Theroretically with better city EPA numbers the Gen should get better average everyday driving MPG, but it's got to be near impossible to keep your foot out of a Turbo with only 2.0L of displacement !! I guess my point of this rambling here is an I4 Turbo Ecoboost Mustang would have a hard time beating the V6 in real world MPG's and would probably not offer much value vs. the added expence.

Doug
I remember GM was considering the 2.0 turbo from the Cobalt SS but there wasn't a big difference compared to the V6. I wouldn't expect much better than 22/32 for a ecoboost 4 Mustang.

Better than the numbers

Actually, probably better than the sticker. With my 08 Bullitt, I normally see 25 on the highway with a best of 28.1 between Green Bay and Minneapolis with the cruise set at 70. This is on a semi restricted 4 lane State Highway. I typically see 21-22 during my daily commute which is a mix of city and country driving.

This has been bugging me since the 412hp number was released. How did Ford come up with 412 as the rating? I mean most engines are rated with a nice round number.

05-09 300hp
99-04 260hp
Our 06 Civic 140

How come they didn't round up to 415 or down to 410? Not complaining just never really understood how they got 412.

The number probably has something to do with someones birthday or anniversary or...

Or it was the average number they came up with for X number of dyno pulls.

Heck, they could have just put a 427 number to it. A good old Ford number, and it would have topped the camaro number by 1...

Uh, what lawsuit would that be? I have a 99 Cobra (which I purchased new in March of 1999) and Ford issued a VOLUNTARY recall to replace the aluminum intake manifold with an Extrude Hone modified part, a new, less restrictive exhaust system and a computer reflash. They even gave all 99 Cobra owners a very nice leather jacket for our suffering. Yes, all this was the result of owners reporting lower than advertised hp numbers from dyno tests but I do not believe there was any lawsuit. There may have been threats implying one but as far as I can recall there never was an actual lawsuit. I doubt a lawsuit over advertised hp figures would have made it very far in the courts anyway since the issue had nothing to do with an actual defect or safety issue. To Ford's credit this was probably the only time any auto manufacturer ever issued a recall to give a car more hp.

There was a lawsuit to my recollection, however, the recall was underway closed to the time it was being filed.

It gets 412 on premium fuel.

It gets a nice round 400 on regular fuel. It was probably important to get this number to 400

Well I certainly won't be the first one to point out eci's stunning contributions to TMS threads, but I see his point here. You're arguing with him just for argument's sake. His point was obviously to throw out the fact that lots of other car company rate their hp ratings at random, odd numbers. They aren't all necessarily "round" numbers. Most of the time that's true, but not ALL manufacturers do it. I don't know how or why they rate hp of engines this way, but 412 doesn't bother me. I really wanted a 427 rating, but I figure Ford chose to split the Camaro's AT/MT numbers on purpose. We all know this engine can make more, but I feel like they could have pulled more GM/Chrysler customers over the Blue Oval if they rated it higher than the SRT8/SS just because hp ratings sells cars!

Exactly. I mean remember HP sells cars TRQ wins races. 427 would have defintely made some of the Mustang Veterans look into a new GT. Plus personally 427 sounds so cool.

I was just wondering about the 412 number though. I am well aware that not all manufactures have nice round numbers. Thanks though.

305hp/3.7 liters = 82.4hp/liter
412hp/5.0 liters = 82.4hp/liter

food for thought

I read somewhere that they are basically the same engine except the 5.0 has two more cylinders on the end, so that is not too surprising

305/6 = 50.8 HP/cylinder
412/8 = 51.5 HP/cyliner

pretty close
