2011 Mustang GT Axle Ratios

So, we know that the 2011 Mustang V6 will come standard with a 2.73 axle ratio, and that 3.31's are optional.

We also know that 2011 Mustang GT's have three optional axle ratios: 3.15, 3.55, and 3.73. However, what is the standard ratio going to be? Thinking out loud here....
  • Is it safe to assume for a 2.73 axle ratio on the GT like the V6 gets since the new 6 speed transmissions offer such steep 1st gears?
  • Or perhaps we keep the 3.31's standard on the GT, with the 3.15 option available for better economy than standard (akin to the SFE special fuel economy packages on F-150's and Fiestas)?

2.73 would be retarded. I doubt we'll see the steep 1st on the GT. Gears like that are for 4 and 6 bangers.

Yeah, I thought it was retarded when I bought a brand new 1989 Mustang 5.0L LX Sport 20 years ago that came with 2.73's. The car was just 2 weeks old when I had 3.73's installed in it.

However, the GT's are getting 6 speeds like the V6, so I can't help but wonder if the gearing may be similar??????

I think that the 3.15 gear will be standard on a new 6 speed transmission, this would also make the 3.55 gear more worthwhile, whereas maybe the 3.73 gear will be like have 4.10 gears on '10 and older cars.

So that means you're guessing the 3.31's are standard with the 3.15's being some sort of special fuel economy option?

I'm not guessing. That was posted in the same thread that broke the info on the SVT Performance Package and GT/CS.

Ah, the lovely M axle code! Z wasn't that great either ( 3.08 ).

My guess is that the 2.73 is a real possibility. I dont think the feds test each and every available axle and this might gain them a mpg on paper. While I would not want a 2.73 its not as bad as it sounds due the ratios in the six speeds these days. If a V6 can pull it a V8 certainly can. I am sure they will pick what ever is optimal for max mpg whether it be a 2.73 or 3.08 or something else knowing full well most will opt for something better or have it changed down the road.

The Gm fanbois are already whining about how Ford trumped up the mileage on the V6 while knowing the 3.27 axle is going to give them fits and then some.

I can't imagine one of those with even 3.73s. It'd never hook!

But, 3.15's are listed as an option in the 2011 Mustang GT order banks - not standard. 2.73's or 3.31's are not listed anywhere in the GT order banks, so that's why I've assumed one of them may be the standard gears.

Seemed like mostly automatic 5.0's got the 3.08's, but even that wasn't enough as you noted. The 3.73's really made that 5.0L come alive.

With that many options, I doubt we'll see any 2.73s on the GT

A lot of this is riding on what the gear ratios are for the six speeds. Will it be the same unit that is in the V6 stang?

The good news is that there are options unlike the gubment motors Camaro. I suspect they will change that soon though. Ford loaded up both barrels this time it looks like and has given us what a lot of us have whined about for a good long time. This does not seem to be the old Ford of the past.
It is literally killing me waiting on the GT specs.

Maybe the standard gears will be 2.73's same as the V6's, which would make sense if the GT's get the same automatic transmission.

I just tried ordering a 2011 GT with an automatic, and it forced me take 3.15 gears. No other option was allowed. Looks like we're getting 3.15's with '11 GT automatics as our only choice. Good thing 1st gear is so steep in the 6 speed automatic.

Order a manual and you get gear ratio choices: 3.15, 3.55, and 3.73. 2.73 and 3.31 are not showing anywhere for GT's in the order banks, so it looks like those are only for the V6's.
