I'd get the 2011 GT over a used 2008 GT500
Racing or not, the 2011 GT is just as fast, handles better, brakes better, gets better gas mileage, has lower insurance cost, is brand new and has a full warranty.

What he said. I haven't driven a 2011 yet, but I owned a 2008 GT500. The 2011 (from what I've read) is a more balanced car. If it were me, I'd get the 2011.

I think I would lean towards the 2011, versus getting another Shelby if the car would be used as a DD. No one knows the issues the new 5.0 may have, but you could be facing the dreaded clutch issue in the Shelby.
However, the Shelby's supercharger whine is very addictive.

2011 GT is a nice drive, but the road is filled with GT's (05-011's). There aren't that many GT500's on the road by comparison and the car is an absolute head turner. If he does decide to mod it a little he can do a lot more with the Shelby.
In the end the choice is his.
Having the GT500 for a DD has never been an issue for me- but maybe I've got stronger legs than some of you.

I would still get the gt500. it's a GT500!
only reason the 2011 gt is 'just as fast' is because of lack of traction btw.
throw some MT's on a stock gt500 and you're all set

The 2007-2009 GT500 has 500 hp and weighs over 3900 lbs.
It runs mid to high 12's @ 111-112 mph.
Sure the GT500 has a bit better power to weight still but it seems to lose it in drivetrain losses or in gearing or something.
The 2011 GT runs the same high 12's @ 111+
The trap speeds speak of the acceleration ability. The GT500 may have a tiny advantage from a roll, but not enough to make a definitive difference.
And both trap similar. They accelerate the same. Both have traction issues out of the gate, hence both have similar 0-60 times as well.
Stock for stock I'd put money on the 2011 GT beating the 2008 GT500 at a track too. Again, similar acceleration ability, but the GT has MUCH better balance than the 07-09 GT500 and has the same Brembo brakes but the GT is 300 lbs less, so it will stop better, understeer less.
2010 GT500 is a different story, and the 2011 GT500 is a different story and cover more.

I'll disagree as well. Friday night at the track a GT500 with Exhaust, suspension, blower pulley, tune, and Mickeys, was getting spanked by our 2011 GT with just CAI, Tune and Nittos. Wasn't close, I was even within 2 mph also.
It's a drivers race to be honest though.

I was surprised to see Motor Trend say they prefer the 11 GT over any GT500 new or a couple years old. They usually would pick the more expensive faster car, but they said the GT was easier to drive fast due to balance and power delivery.
