But you also have to compare to the average car size nowadays. Look at the current Accord compared to the mid eighties one, which would qualify as a compact now. Most compacts are pushing 2800+ now; back when compacts first arrived, they were also about 1000lbs less.

Compared to the Challenger and the Camaro, the Mustang is more of a true pony car, even though it's bloated and needs to lose weight. Those are its most direct competitors, but even compared to the Genesis coupe it's not too heavy, relatively speaking.
The Challenger is truly a muscle car, nothing pony about it, the Camaro is the only one close to the Stang, and we don't like it cause it's Brand X.

The NASA forums have several guys doing the hp/weight classification for time trials, and have stripped the S197 to about 3000lbs with the driver, which is pretty good for just removing the interior and unnecessary parts. So the body itself is where alot of that weight is. But the luxury bits, big heavy wheels/tires, etc don't help.

 

A much more fair comparison would be the current Mustang GT to a 1969-70 Mustang (or a Fox body to the 1964.5-66 Mustang). Dimensions and weights are very very close in each of those cases. Mustang size and weight increases have gone in cycles over the years, and I'm really hoping we see a return to Fox body (or 1965-66) dimensions with the next redesign, rather than another jump in size and weight like with the 1971-73 Mustangs.

I've decided to keep the stock 18"s on my GT for the winter and get an after market set of 18"s for the summer. The tires on the Mustangs with 18"s are hardly low profiles I see that now that I got mine lol.

i dont track my car but the 1695 for brakes like this is a bargian. if you wanted to do it yourself it would cost WAY more then 1695, more like 4000. with brakes, tires wheels ext.

 

The Brembo package is a good deal, but not quite $4000 to replicate, or even better (I wouldn't spend the $384/tire to pay for those Pirellis, and would get a wider tire). The thing is it includes the suspension tweaks, and the stability reprogramming, supposedly, so who knows their worth.

Just want to point out the bold type and the parts you posted. You do realize you just posted $3500 in parts after saying it wouldn't be $4k in parts. Add in suspension parts you have $4K.

I think there's an opportunity to subtract some $$ from that total for what the replaced parts are worth. I'd say the net is maybe $2500. More than $1600 more but not ridiculously so. For those of us with the 6AT, that FRPP brake kit looks like a decent deal.

A member on AFM just bought some GT500 take off Brembos and installed on his V6. I think it cost him $500 for the set. Not a bad deal to upgrade.

This topic is one that people can beat to death, but the point is, if you went out and bought all new parts from a dealer or third party to 100% duplicate the BBP, it's going to cost more than if you'd just ordered it. Of course, you can sample bits and pieces from it and add to your heart's content, and that might make more sense to some.

A more effective option might be to pick up the FRPP equivalent of a Boss 302 suspension (springs, adj. shocks/struts, sways) and a set of take-off Brembos from a GT or GT500, then merge the two. The end result would be a "better" performing car in most attributes.

An alternative idea: I remember my '68 Continental had "double brakes" - as in, double calipers per disc (four pistons). I found this article trying to confirm what I remember.

Instead of Bembos, just double your calipers!!! That's a mod I'd like to see...
