160 MPH Speedo
160 MPH Speedo
What do you think. Yay or nay?
What they should have done (in my fantasy world) is made a 120 MPH speedo stock, with the 160 MPH (or maybe even 180?) speedo as an option. I like there being 160s for those who want them, but I bet there are many out there like me that will rarely if ever get over 120, and would rather have a less crowded speedo.

I agree with that. All those big numbers may impress your friends but who will really use the big end of the scale? The current 140 dial is already jumbled.
More options = more cost. Too bad though, I wish things could be as they were in the 60's and 70's when option lists were long without all the packages.
Having said all that, I'd still probably want the 160 clock, not to be left out of the fun!

I plan on trying to use it! I live in northern Italy though, so it's just a couple hours to the autobahn in Germany and unlimited speed limits...
I want to see how fast it will go at least once, probably won't be very often.

Admittedly, the only car I've driven on the Autobahn so far was a cargo van with a 4 cyl turbo deisel. I got it up to about 170 kph downhill, that's the best I could get... I expect the Mustang to do a little better than that.
All the 60's thru mid 70's & 94-up cars I've owned have had 120 MPH Speedos and my '79 Faimont Futura is the only car I've owned with 140 MPH (FMS Speedo I installed in a Mustang GT Cluster).
In the real world, a 120 Speedo is the best for everyday driving (around the USA anyway) as 60 MPH is right on top making the normal 45-75 MPH range centered on the top half of the gauge.
The 85 MPH Speedos of the mid 70's through the late 80's (or was it early 90's) were truly a complete JOKE and is why I put the 140 MPH FMS Speedo in my H.O. 5.0L Fairmont.
I've probably broken 100 MPH over the past 30 years of driving only a few times, so I personally see no need for more than 120 MPH. I'm not real pleased that my '11 will have a 160 MPH Speedo, but I'll get used to it.

Just like everyone with a 2011 GT will get a 412hp V8 - even though the majority of people will barely take advantage of half of that power. There will still be some who drive the snot out of their cars and take advantage of every last ounce of power - we should not limit the car to our personal level of driving.
Maybe the option of having a 120mph would be nice for people who don't take their cars past that point - and who want the increased resolution.. but I don't blame Ford for saving us money by going with a single speedo option.
Eh.. I think the speedo should always show at least the maximum speed of the car. I was chasing a friend's SRT8 Charger down a country road, and I had to rely on his word about how fast we were going, because my speedo doesn't have any marks past 145mph. I'm really looking forward to having a speedo that hopefully matches or exceeds the top speed of the car.
While I'm not opposed to the idea of driving my car at 160 MPH (actually sounds rather fun), I can't imagine what would happen to you if you got caught doing 160 MPH by the cops. Life in prison?

Would be nice if they had made the speedo similar to the Z06 Vette, standard marks to 100 and then half marks to 200. Or in the stangs case standard marks to 80 and then half marks to 160.
If you don't understand what I am talking about, look at this and you will get it.

I don't see how the Ford engineers missed the speedo disply on these Mustangs so badly either,, If they wanted the 140 and now 160 display, they really needed to make the speedo display either 240 or 270 degrees so the part that we use the most from 0-75 can be seen,, or at least put a digital read out in the trip computer display so you know how fast you are going,
I was test driving in a 35-mph zone and looking a the speed, I couldn't tell how fast I was going, I haven't haven't gotten a speeding ticket in 25-years and I'd hate to get one now because Ford made the speedo display too cramped,,
They did a much better job on the Ford Edge,,

I'd agree with this. If the car can hit 150 "stock" (random number) then the speedo should reflect at least this. Question is is there going to be a limiter on it in factory form? I know my GTO is limited at 155 and my Z was limited at 117 (non Z rated tires from factory).
Usually, your sent to jail, car impounded, and a MASSIVE list of expensive fines.

If someone has a problem with the 160 speedo they must have some serious vision issues.
