05-2011 Mustang Cervini's Tail Lamp Conversion Group Buy!!!
No, the black is mandatory. However, you could paint it.
The reason it's mandatory is:
1) The new lights are built like that on the outside. They completely replace the original tail lamps, and so to ensure all can use them 'out of the box', the plastic 'filler' has to be neutral... black is about as neutral as cars get on that kind of thing.
2) The center panel is one piece, with the two reflectors built in. Again, the black is neutral.

I'm thinking I will be unable to participate in this group purchase - my car won't even be here by the deadline. However, with a couple of simple changes, I might even convince "she who must be obeyed" that the regular price is worth it.
The sequential signals should illuminate the four segments individually (since you can't light the two inboard reflectors to do a 2-2-2 sequence). Webelectrics.com already does this with four segment Challenger tail lights. The 1-1-2 sequence looks amateurish.
The bumper needs to accomodate dual exhaust tips like the factory one does. For that matter, does the replacement bumper blend in with an otherwise stock body or is it designed to go with a body kit?
Any chance the rear view camera can be adapted to fit the new spoiler? (or the spoiler adapted to fit the camera?)

Here is a rough render of my SIMPLE approach to these lights. All you would need to do is create a module insert that fills in the existing factory light space through the existing rear lamp mounts. Then, create a deck-lid trim panel that fits onto the trunk and matches the rest of the filled space along with containing the lights that overlay onto the trunk. The lights on the trunk should be functional, as there is already light wiring for the brake light right above the GT badge on the top of the trunk.
Heres the rough rendering I made, again the idea was to make it work without having to put on a new bumper, duck wing, and body kit. I imagine this would look badass with a shelby spoiler, my car just has the factory decklid spoiler so its all i had to work with

Im not good at that stuff but I kinda like this plus it would be easy to do.
I dont think the black surround is mandatory and breaking up the stripe doesnt do it for me.
This would be a compromise of a reflection of the past option.
The interior lights would be 3M'ed on with the wires running around the trunk.
Anyway...just a mix of new and old.....as I dont care much for the smaller lights.
hey...just an idea. It would make it allot easier to make and cheaper which would = more sales.
If you use it just give me a discount will ya??

The Cervini one is sick. Looks modern as hell, but seems like to much work to make it fit etc...
^^ This is ridiculously awesome. That looks amazing.

WeinerDog isn't exaggerating. The photoshop is a bad attempt at looking retro. Just because it looked good on the classics doesn't mean it will translate well to our vehicles. Some things are better left to the Mustangs of the 60s and 70s - such as rear window louvers, chrome trim, chrome door handles, etc. Just my 2 cents.

Another quick, raw unrefined photoshop I made to kill some time...figured I would share. Just an experiment for fun. Hard to judge a few of the curves and angles the lights would have to take
That shot is misleading. Those inner reflectors appear to "light up" and yet the 3rd brake light doesn't. So they're not reflecting light and the brake pedal isn't pressed but there's an awful lot of "light" coming from them. Photoshop does amazing things. . . Do you have any pics that aren't photoshopped?
