Guys what car has a better chance of being a classic in say 40yrs? Maybe neither but if you had to pick one.

In before the inevitable flaming and pissing contest. Keep in mind this won't stop me from participating

I say '11 due to the revolutionary powertrains. but then I say '05 for reviving the pony car wars....hmmmm

Is a 64-66 any more of a classic than a 67 or 68? A 68 more than a 69/70?

Nope, everyone will have a favourite but they will ALL be classics

The 5.0 is big news, and therefore more likely to be "classic" in my opinion.

They'll be remembered in their own way.
2005 was more of a huge leap forward in terms of getting back to the look of the traditional mustang.
(moreso than the 94-04 lines, even though they carried cue's)
The 911 of Mustangs if you will. Keeping the look evolving, but staying more true to the original interpreation.

This could change when the next model comes out, but we'll have to see where the design team goes. I'd hate for them to twist it into something completely different.

The 2011 looks for the most part the same as the previous year, which again isn't a HUGE leap forward.
It'll be remembered moreso for its engine.

Lookswise though, 2005 is the year that people will remember the mustang going back to its roots in term of styling.

Hmmm... the 5.0 is big news because Ford took forever to bring it back. And the new 5.0 is a masterpiece of engineering and performance. A 100HP bump out of 20 more cubes is a big deal. And a new 6 spd trans is awesome too.

However, powertrains varied & evolved in Gen I & II. But it was the Mustang styling cues, the Ponycar with its shark nose front, hockey stick/C, 2+2, quarter window/louver fastback, with its 289 V8... that started its 45+ year run.

So as for "classic" I'm voting S197 5-9, not the Diaper series. Until 05, there hadn't been anything close in a couple of decades. It was the game changer - for Mustang fans and for muscle cars because without it, there would be no Chally or Maro. And the Fox (jimmy square box) & SN95 (underbite series) were nice cars in their own right but as for "classic Mustang", they weren't even close. IMO

I love my S197 08 Bullitt and its 315HP 281. The SOHC 3V performs and is unique in a world of 4V's.

Speaking of that, the Mustang is the only other car besides the 911 that has been in continuous production since 1964.

Really something when you think about it.

As far as I can tell, there were no gaps in Corvette production. Unless you count 1983, a year that could be argued either way I think:

And just where the heck is the 2010 in this poll?? It is the "transition Mustang" - the last of the 4.0 and 4.6 engines!

Lower production than the others. Just sure they'll be classics

There may have been a few 1983 PP models built but there wasn't a 1983 model year for the Corvette. You could not go to a Chevy dealerahip and buy a 1983 Vette.

Does that mean there was a break in Vette production? IMHO, yes.

Back to the topic:

I think each has their place. All will be collectable for what they are but it will depend on what the collector has in mind. But if you look at the trends, big HP is more collectable in general.

Museum pieces and test mules don't count.

No 1983 Corvettes were sold. Quality and production problems had delayed introduction of the new C4 generation so 1983 was passed over.

Well, it's easy to forget the vette...

Of course the 911 and Mustang have always been steel bodied 2+2 cars unlike that other one.

...and not just b/c I own one. I suspect that years from now the '10s may be more collectible than the '09s or the '11s for the reasons Tony gave.

40 years from now when I'm 90 I'll be sitting in my rocking chair telling youngsters they don't know squat about cars. I used to have an "oh 5" Mustang.

God willing, I'm not selling anymore Mustangs, I'll add to the stable, but not take away. Even though I have an '11 on the way it just pisses me off to see my old car roaring down the street with this fool driving it... yea yea yea, I got issues and need counseling.

That will make it all that more enjoyable to roar past a column of silent electric cars, in your vintage 2011 Mustang. Sure, it will cost you $600 to fill up at $50/gallon, but it will be worth it.

I can't wait to noxiously spew my fumes from my old school 2011 retromobile in the lame and tame green world of tomorrow.

And the rumbling v8 sound.. it will be ridiculous compared to anything driving around in 2050. Maybe even illegal.

It will be a pretty unique thing to have a big gurgling IC engine in that day. Driving away from stop lights will make little kids cry in terror... "Mommy! That car made a sound like God shouting.. "

Man, the future is going to be sweet.
