What's in a name?

Apparantely to my wife, it means a lot. We were discussing different options for replacing my Escape when the RCO is up, and I brought up the Taurus X. My wife makes the comment "Ya know, I always like the styling of the Freestyle but I just HATED the name. Now that they've renamed it, I wouldn't mind having one!". I love my wife but sometimes she makes me wonder.....

I agree with your wife. I couldn't care less about Five Hundred, but now that it have Taurus name, I actually might buy one if Ford never builds Interceptor.

Besides the lack of auto up-down front windows and no power lift gate, my wife's biggest objection to buying an Edge is that it carries the "Ford" name.

If she decides against the Taurus X, I might look at an AWD Taurus to replace the Escape (I'm tired of driving an SUV and if she doesn't come up with a reason to buy another, I'm buying a car).

That was before I saw the CX-9!

Actually, as I said before, unless my wife wants a CUV, I'm replacing the Escape with a car. If she wants a CUV, I'll start driving her Lincoln LS.

I saw Edge in person for a first time last week at Milwaukee Auto Show and I really liked what I saw. Add one more row of seats and I wouldn't mind owning one.

See to me the third row would be a turn-off. In the same way that lux sports cars like the Jag XK are a turnoff becuase they're designed to be big enough for a full golf bag, the third row just robs some of the coolness from the car. With two rows, it says: I bought this becuase I like they way it looks and drives, not becuase it fit my demographic. 'Course I drive a Miata so I'm slightly insane anyway.

Where's that CUV formerly known as Fairlane anyway?

I agree, we don't want nor need a 3rd seat. That's the main thing my wife & I don't like about the CX-9, it's over a foot longer than an Edge or MKX.

Again I don't understand why so many people are ragging on the Edge for not having a 3rd seat. It's only 186" long. It's designed to compete with other SUV / CUVs in that size class that do not have 3rd seats. Ford has other SUVs with 3rd seats to compete in that market segment.

If you need a 3rd seat buy a Freestyle or 08 Taurus X.

The Murano is the target for the Edge.

Murano can't be only one.

No, but it's considered the benchmark.

BTW, the Edge came close to outselling the Murano this month (7,977 vs 8,100). It will be interesting to see if it beats it in March.

Edmunds.com had a full review on Edge and they compared it to Santa Fe, RAV4 and CX-7. So I assumed those are main competition.

Tom is correct, the Murano was the benchmark for the Edge.
The Lexus RX-330 (now RX-350) was the benchmark for the Lincoln MKX.

Neither the Murano nor the RX-350 have 3rd row seats. And, both the Murano and the RX-350 are about the same overall length as the Edge and MKX.

IMHO the Edge and MKX are good competitors in their market segments, but they fall short in a few areas. Here's what they need to be best in class:

Edge:
Better Steering, Brakes & tires.
EBD
Manumatic
More convenience features such as auto up-down windows, HomeLink, smart key ignition, HID headlamps.
As seat cushion tilt adjustmen to the front passenger's seat.
Raise the rear seat, it's too low.

MKX:
Better Steering, Brakes, tires & handling
EBD
Manumatic
More luxurious looking dash - as my wife put it, the RX-350, MDX & FX-35 dash's look like star wars. The MKX's dash looks like a Taurus.
Better front seats.
More Luxury features: Rear view camera, HID headlamps, smart key
ignition, auto wipers, power steering wheel tilt & telesope with memory, adjustable pedals.
Raise the rear seat, it's too low.

That's been one of Ford's big problems. They leave out a few items that all their competitors have, which causes lost sales.
