Ok so we get 100 forum members, throw in 10 grand each, and everyone gets it for 3.3 something days!

 

It's funny how the price is over $1M and they are bidding the price up $100-200 a bid. Hahaha.. that is like bidding up a thousand dollar item by dimes!!

if I were collecting GT40's, i'd rather throw my millions at a car with a storied history.

 

Galaxie, your absolutely correct. A good friend of my father's, recently sold his GT40, which he owned for the past 28 years, to Symbolic Motors in California. Then they restored it back to the original race livery, and they auctioned it off. His was the oldest in exsistance, chassis # GT103. It was the oldest remaining prototype. GT's 101 & 102 were destroyed decaded ago racing, but his survived. Plus, his was the 1st to win a race for Ford. I didn't ask him how much he got for it (nor was it my place to know), but the car went up for auction in Monterey this past August, and it went for $2.5M :shock: Needless to think, I figure he got very close to $2M for it. He even jokingly told me, the company that bought it, didn't make that much on it.

Hey Andy, Yes I did on several occasions! The one time I was there, I was more than allowed to sit in the car, but I had just undergone a major surgury, and I still had dozens of staples in my midsection, so getting into this car was not going to happen, LOL! You really don't know just how small a real GT40 is until you see one in person. The car was AMAZING. The coolest thing, was that he regularly drove it on the street, when he took it to local car shows. Most people saw the car, in the as raced condition (not the picture in the link) and thought, it was a kit car. Boy did these people have NO CLUE.

 

Man when it comes to seeing rare cars Jeff, you take the cake.

I wonder why they fixed it up. I would think the "as raced" condition would be more acceptable for a car with that heritage. I don't suppose you have any pics of it?

 

Hey Andy, the only pics I have are before I invested in a digital camera, and I don't have a scanner. By the time I wanted to take more shots, he had sold the car. I'll see what I can come up with in the next few days.

 

Thanks man! What was the original color of the car?

 

Morning Andy. The original color (before my friend got it) of the car was the same as the pic I had attached to the link, Guardsman Blue with White Stripes and #73, which was the number it wore when it won for the 1st time. See this car was the prototype that when it didin't perfom as expected, Ford gave it to Shelby American, and you know Carroll, he made the car into what they became to be. When the car was put up for sale, and my Dad's friend bought it, he asked the car to be paiinted Ford Fez Red, which was a deep maroon. It was that color since '66 to last year, when they repainted it back to original Shelby Specifications.

Ahhh, now I see why it was repainted. That makes sense to me to have it painted the original color. What a piece of history. Just to be able to touch that car has to send a tingle through one's body.
