My 1963 1/2 Galaxie 500XL

Here are pics of a 1963 1/2 Ford Galaxie 500XL fastback I purchased from my brother. The interior is shot all to heck, but the exterior isn't all that bad. No rust on the frame that I could see. My brother also said the previous owner said it was a "gold edition" Galaxie (hence the gold fender embelems). I can't find anything on this. Anyone know anything about "gold edition" galaxies?!

Can anyone tell what type of motor is in it? It has a manual tranny in the floor... I think 4 speed. The car is in TN and I haven't seen it in a while.

All your photo links are messed up. One can edit the URL to make it work but it would be better if you cleaned them up.

Anyways, that would be a great car to have but it is in ROUGH shape! Good luck with the project!!

Engines: 289 V8 195 bhp. 352 V8 220 bhp. 390 V8 300 bhp. 390 V8 330 bhp. 427 V8 410 bhp @ 5600 rpm. 427 V8 425 bhp @ 6000 rpm, 480 lb-ft.

You'll need to get some numbers off the block/heads I am guessing to figure out what engine is in it.

Looks to me to be one of the smaller V8s (289 or 352). Note the single carb.

Looks like a single carb FE motor to me... so it might be a 352 or 390?

I'm told it is a 390 with a manual trans in the floor. But I'm also told it is the legendary "gold edition" of which I can't seem to find squat on, hence my skepticism.

EDIT: Next time I'm in TN I'll try to get some better shots of the car, including the shady interior.

i garentee(sp?) it is a 352 because it was the smallest engine in that year to have the oil fill and the front of the engine

Looks like a great project! Those are one of my very favorite cars. I had to pass on a smoking deal on one last year......black, red interior, 390/auto, no rust and in pretty nice running shape. Needed a lot of attention inside the car and some rechroming on the bumpers and stuff, but for $2000 it was well worth it. Just didn't have room for another project at the time. Later I went back and he'd sold it. Dammit.

Good to see another 63 1/2 on the boards! I think all the 500XL emblems had some gold accent on them, I can't see yours very well to determine if its different.

If that's the original engine, then the 5th character of the VIN would tell you. If it's an X, then its the 352, a Z would be a 390. If its anything else...there's a chart on the bottom of this page(not to mention a lot of other info)-http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~stanchfi/...xie-us-id.html

It should start: 3P66X

Thats the 352 4spd Galaxie

Your gold status would be indicated on the data plate codes.

check the LOVEfords web site under production numbers.

Judging by the valve covers and other stuff in the engine bay, I would say that your Galaxie is a Z code 300hp 390 4-v engine. Is it for sale?

sweet car. there was a galaxie like that listed on the local CL like that a month ago "in reverse" - interior in good shape, exterior rusty and engine not running. stored in a carport. otherwise intact but no title. =( would have made an excellent parts donor. hope to see this one redone at some point.

It's definitely an FE motor, 352 or 390. If it were the 406 or 427, it would have the nice oval air cleaner. Either way it's one of my favorite classic Fords.
