Ford UAW workers approve strike authorization as bargaining tool
The Detroit Free Press reports that at least four Ford UAW locals have overwhelmingly voted to authorize leadership to call a strike. The move, which is considered to be routine, comes only two weeks before the contracts with General Motors, Ford and Chrysler run out on September 14. The UAW has asked all local units to hold strike authorization votes by Friday.

UAW, Ford reach tentative agreement
Ford and the United Auto Workers have agreed to a tentative labor agreement, according to Automotive News. The pact makes Ford the second domestic automaker to come to reach an accord with the labor union, and the deal covers some 41,000 workers. The agreement is expected to be discussed in further detail during separate press conferences held by representatives from the UAW and Ford. While no solid details are available as of the time of writing, Automotive News suggests that the deal may be very similar to the one that General Motors and the UAW recently agreed upon.
That means that we can likely to expect to see Ford planning to add or maintain domestic jobs through a variety of plant investments. Even so, Ford had sought to reduce its labor costs heading into negotiations. Some analysts suggest that Ford pays anywhere from $2-9 more per labor hour than GM or Chrysler once benefits are accounted for. Additionally, Ford has fewer lower-paid workers than either of its two domestic competitors, and the automaker pays those workers more.

I say pay them a fair wage not one cent more. If they dont like it buy a new labor pool. I am sure we have a million people that would wait in line to make 50 bucks an hour to put lug nuts on a car. People can and should be replaced.

My current job is not that much better (I'm a social worker) and I don't make anywhere close to $50/hour.
So it can be worse - boring job and poor pay. Ofcourse, it can be even worse (no job and no pay) so I'm not complaining.

I had a colleague with a very high opinion of himself. He said he wished he could find an employer that would pay him what he was worth. I replied that I never wanted to find that employer because I might starve to death!
See, Children, a Union and a major US manufacturer went into a room and when they came out, there were more jobs IN the USA and AMERICAN workers were getting performance bonuses and BOTH sides are happy with it. This without heavy-handed legislation, or over-the-top tax breaks, or legislative neutering of Labour, or a strike. THIS is how it's supposed to work in this country.

Employers will pay you what you are worth if they want to keep you. If you feel like you are underpaid, then either you are in the wrong job or you are over rating your value.
