Ford recalls 3.8 million SUVs and pickups for fire hazard
WASHINGTON (AP) — Ford said Wednesday that it will recall 3.8 million pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles for a cruise control switch suspected of causing engine fires.
It is the fifth largest auto recall in U.S. history. (Related: Toyota recalls 1M trucks)
Ford said the recall of 1994-2002 model-year vehicles includes the company's hot-selling F-150 pickup truck, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Broncos. The company said it will start sending recall notices to vehicle owners immediately.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the No. 2 U.S.-based automaker have been investigating complaints of engine fires linked to the switch.
NHTSA has received more than 550 complaints of engine fires from the cruise control switch. There have been allegations of three deaths in cases cited in news reports or lawsuits in Iowa, Georgia and Arkansas.
The affected vehicles include: 1994-2002 F-150 pickups, 1997-2002 Expeditions, 1998-2002 Navigators and 1994-1996 Broncos equipped with factory-installed speed control.
"We have a solution that fixes the problem, and we're confident that this is going to be the right remedy," said Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley.

Heard about it today. Sometimes its in the best interest to play it safe and be sure the vehicle is fixed. That's why I stand by Ford so much. A solution is always best instead of pretending that a problem doesn't exist.
oof, this is bad publicity to say the least. i bet they could lose many many sales of any vehicles, including the fusion, cause of the bad rep this is gonna give them. even though this article came right before another one on autosinsider:
"Fires prompt huge Ford recall of trucks, SUVs"
Go One of industry's largest recalls comes as ailing automaker faces mounting lawsuits
Toyota recalls 1 million trucks over flawed parts
Go Its largest U.S. recall, which was voluntary, covers 4Runners, small pickups and T-100s"
people are gonna react very sorely to this. it makes me kinda fear for the future of the company.

I don't think it will affect the sales at all. A recall is simply the company trying to find a solution. If they were to ignore it that would be a different story.
A simple quote I heard "Anybody who claims to have a vehicle without recalls is really walking."

ya, i agree, everybody has recalls.... as i said, the headline right under the ford recall was about a huge toyota recall. but most people who buy cars don't stay on top of automotive news and realize how often recalls happen. most people are just gonna hear that ford put out cars that started fires in homes, and that they made 3.8 million of these potential fire hazzards, whether that's entirely true or not.
sure they're fixing the problem, but after hundreds of fires and one person dying. this looks really bad.

I understand your concern but no one has been injured at all. I assume you were referring to the issue of the Mohlis's which has been ruled as not starting from the vehicle but from elsewhere in the garage.
Also recalls for both companies (Ford & Toyota) were done as voluntary which means both companies realize that there may be an issue and they are both taking a precautionary measure. A federal recall is when the government steps in and takes charge which is not so good.
The problem is what you stated, people read what a news company puts out and take it for gospel. A perfect example of how flawed the news is would be to compare USA Today's information and CNN's. They are different and conflicting.
In my opinion when you look at how many people out there cry wolf to situations like this you wonder really how little of a number of vehicles are actually affected.
As for people staying on top of the automotive news thats where we as a whole need to educate more people.
"An inspection of the fire scene demonstrates conclusively that the fire did not originate from the 1996 Ford F-150, and specifically not from its speed control deactivation switch," the statement said.
"Remnants of the switch were found at the scene and reviewed by Ford investigators during their inspection. These remnants rule out the switch as the cause of the fire. Instead, the evidence suggests that the fire started elsewhere in the garage, spreading to the F-150 and the Mohlis home."
