As we have discussed before, it was only a matter of time until prices came down to whatever reality is. The dealer who turned down $280K may be kicking himself soon.

The dealers who are still asking $200K or $300K either really don't want to sell the car, or for some reason believe rumors over facts.

The facts are that today there are two GTs on eBay with "buy it now" prices in the $170's, and by definition, the cars are worth no more than that today.

Just imagine a 2005 Ford GT going across the stage at Barrett-Jackson auctions in 30-40 years. I think buying one now would be a good investment.

That dealer is just looney. The only other reason I can think of is that he really wants to keep the car and priced it so high that he would have to sell it if someone wanted to pay that. Then he could go and buy one for around $170K.

Uhh, I don't think so.

Forty years at 10% appreciation means the car would be worth $7.7 million dollars, assuming you paid $170K for it today.

Not gonna happen.

The Ford GT is a great car, but it's not the only great car. And with 3000 to 4000 total to be built, there will be plenty to go around.

I offered my dealer $190,000 for the one he has ($156,000 msrp+$100,000 "Market Enhanced Price") and he told me to take a hike!

3000 to 4000, minus the ones that get wrecked, seen 4 that have died so far. I've seen cars with less popularity and bigger production numbers go for a much larger percentage then some investments would.

Whit, buy an 07 Shelby Cobra and an old Cobra. Best of both worlds.

Maybe true, maybe not, but when you factor in maintenance and insurance costs over the years almost all cars are poor investments. But then again you can't drive your portfolio!

Think of the guys who bought a mid 60's V-12 Ferrari like the 275 GTB for around 14K. In the late 80's they were going for over a mil. Half that now, but still pretty darned good for a car.

Totally different story.

There were only about 300 Ferrari 275's made.

Not 4000.

There are in-stock cars on ebay with "Buy it now" prices in the $170s.

Why would you offer $190K for one?

That was my point. The Ford GT isn't in a low production category and I don't think it's worth more than MSRP today. I'm not even convinced that it's going to be worth any more a few years down the road. We'll see.

As for the Ferrari, the GTB today commands a whole lot more money than the GTS (convertible). I know a guy who just had his appraised at $165K. Not bad, but he's owned it since new. I wonder how much money that original purchase price would be worth today if he had just parked it in something like a decent mutual fund.

Gainesville Ford has a white w/blue stripes for $280K. The price includes the five "DO NOT TOUCH" signs.
