Cool Ford GT sets standing mile record at 257 MPH

Wowsa!!

Ford GT sets standing mile record at 257 MPH

Published March 26, 2012

Imagine hitting 257 miles per hour…in one mile.
That’s the new event record for a standing mile set over the weekend by Sean Kennedy of Katy, Texas, at the Texas Mile event in Beeville, behind the wheel of a modified 2006 Ford GT. The current Guinness Book-recognized mark is 223 mph, also set by an '06 GT.
Sporting a twin-turbocharged setup by Texas tuning house Hennessey Performance, the 5.4-liter V8 runs at an astonishing 34 psi of boost and is controlled by a high performance MoTeC engine management system.
The exact power output of the motor is unknown, but John Hennessey tells FoxNews.com “2000 hp is a pretty safe bet.”
For comparison, the stock Ford GT with its supercharged version of the engine put out 550 hp with 12 pounds of boost and had a top speed of 205 mph. Kennedy’s car was going 204 mph at the half mile mark.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about Kennedy's car is that it competes in the street legal class, although it was burning 117 octane racing fuel for the record run.
Owned by Mark Heidaker, the GT has been competing for several years, increasing its performance at each outing. And his team isn’t done with it yet.
Kennedy says they’ll be back for the next Texas Mile competition in October and has their sights on 260 mph.

This is a real accomplishment because by the account of people that ran the mile the pavement is not in the best of shape. It was an abandoned Naval Air Station that hasn't been used in a decade. One guy said there is no track prep they just vacuum it for debris. Not even a 400hp Mustang can hookup till at least 30mph. Everything is from a slow launch.

Not to take anything away from the accomplishment, but it's too bad Hennessey's hp numbers are inflated. No need for that. Looks like the guy with the "F ENZO" car is going to have to fly back to Texas and try retake the record...

That car burnt down in Addison. I got passed by it a couple years ago on the Mockingbird off ramp.

well, to be honest, the Veyron is something to marvel at. The technology in it and it's engineering is astonishing. Sure these cars can do 250mph in one mile, but they need to be driven my an expert driver so as not to just spin out, and they can't do it consistently for years, which the Veyron can. To have that much speed from a manufactured road car with the reliability and style to boot is astonishing.

That being said, I dislike the Veyron, think it's overpriced, ugly, and a fat tub that I'd never buy. Give a GT, and I'll be able to go in more than just a straight line!

Good thing is the paint job is a vinyl wrap, it can be peeled off and the car can be gorgeous again!

I've always said the GT is the best super car, the best. At 150k it's also reasonable.
I may be the only one but I like the paint job or sticker or whatever I think it looks cool
