Ford boosts Focus production by 30% to meet demand
Probably has a lot to do with gas prices taking a jump. I still can't believe we don't have a Focus Hybrid on the market yet, or even in the planning stage from what I know. That would be a hot selling little car I would bet. If Hybrid technology can make the Escape get 34mpg, I would have no doubt a tiny Focus could get 50 mpg.
American car, 50mpg, nice tax credit to offset higher vehicle cost = great seller with todays gas prices. Heck, look at how well the Prius is doing. It sold 181,221 units in the US in 2006. The market is obviously there.

It was the "in" thing to insult the '08 Focus on the internet and in car magazines; "enthusiasts" seemed to enjoy bashing it and calling it a failure. But real buyers have spoken with their wallets as retail sales are up and market share is up. Sweet!
Again: a little perspective >>
So it's barely beating the Cobalt, but still lagging behind the segment leaders. What Ford needs is a car that RECLAIMS the segment - maybe then they can reclaim a fully profitable North American operation.
And as someone else pointed out, Car and Driver ranked it eighth out of eight contemporary compact vehicles, because the overall performance was in the middle of the pack, but the styling of the interior/exterior was awful.
For comparison's sake, Toyota sold 371,390 Corollas in 2007, while Honda sold 331,095 Civics and Chevy sold 200,620 Cobalts. The Corolla and Civic are both handily outselling their domestic competition so far this year, but the Focus is now slightly ahead of the Cobalt, which sold 48,024 units through March.
