Escape or Edge

We are looking at getting something that we can throw the kids and dog into along with being able to go to Lowe's without worrying about how to get bigger items home. Our family car is a 2009 Dodge Charger so it has a lot of room but we can't throw the dog in the back with the kids and home improvement store trips are impossible with the entire family. Starting to look at either an SUV or CUV and keep coming back to the Escape and Edge. The Edge seems to have about 3-4 inches more leg room in the back and about 3cf more cargo space but with that comes a $10k increase over the Escape.

Had an Escape before and loved it but like the looks of the Edge a little more and the extra leg room is favorable. Anyone have any good pros and cons of either (or both) of these? There are some decent incentives right now if we take possession before the end of the year.

TIA

I love both. The edge is more of the daily mom car. The escape is more of a I might go off roading in my free time car. The edge drives amazingly smooth and is easy to handle. The edge feelslike a tall town car to me because it is so nice. I am sure you can find a good rebate on a 2010 edge. The escape is great if you are trying to save a buck but it is alittle smaller. The edge also has a few more toys in it like the glass roof(my fav thing about it) and the fold down cargo area is pretty amazing.

flex? i know it looks funny, but it would serve your purpose... especially the Lowes one. I have a freestyle and we can get 8 ft lumber in it.

We have an Edge and it seem more roomy on the inside vs the Escape, and with the back seat down can haul a lot of cargo. It also rides much smoother than the Escape. But test drive both and make your own decision.

EDIT: Have you priced the Flex lately? Man, those are expensive. We're talking ~32K for an Edge vs ~42K for the Flex. I like the third row seat, but that's pretty steep for what is basically an updated station wagon.

the flex is 20k more then the escape. you could buy a escape and a 2011 v6 stang for the same price as the flex. I would say buy a Expedition if you want to get into the price range of the flex.

They're both pretty good vehicles. The Escape as you noted is cheaper, but it's also at the tail end of its product cycle so it's lacking a bunch of the features that Edge is rocking. If it were me and I could afford the Edge over the Escape, that's how I'd go.

Cool Check Out New 2011 Explorer?

Throwing this one in, just for one more possiblity. You may want to do a little research on the great looking new 2011 Explorer coming out this winter? Not Cheap! Reading some pretty good blog stuff on this newbee!!

We were orginally going to get an Escape. But it was a little too small for us for traveling. And the 1st Lady did not really like the low roof line on the good looking Edge model. She would some times almost hit her head on the sloping top of the "A" pillar when getting in and out on our test drives. As she is 5' 8" tall. So both of those nice models were out for our own needs.

Our research so far indicates that the new 2011 Explorer may be just what we are looking for? Bigger in size and great gas mileage too! There is a big 2011 Explorer dealer reveal here on November 9th only to invited Ford customers. Cannot wait to now see this brand new FoMoCo Product!! See Promo Pix. "RC"

I agree on Explorer, it's only a $1,000 more expensive than Edge, but much more bigger.

Car for dollar, the Explorer. I do like the Edge a lot more than the Escape, but yeah I see the cost issue. Before I'd get the Escape, I'd get the Jeep Patriot, but that's just me.

A lady I work with had one and it was worse on gas then her f250.

The egde looks way better and the inside is much nicer. The jeep feels like super cheap 1990's plastic.

Are you sure she didn't have a Liberty? The 6 cyl Liberty gets as low as 15 mpg, worse of course depending on driving habits. The Patriot's the 4 cyl.
There's a broad difference in trim levels w/ the Patriot. The stripped down model doesn't even have carpet, the upper models w/ leather, sunroofs, etc are very nice.

I think you need a better Jeep salesman. (I'm a Jeep guy ) The Compass and Patriot are nearly identical. Same motor, same platform, same interior materials and basic design. If there's a difference, it's the better optional 4x4 system on the Patriot. They're the same vehicle w/ different styling. To say one is better than the other is like saying that Yellow is better than Purple.

Anywho - sorry for veering off topic.

I'm a former jeep guy (I got off the wagon when the Wrangler got fat) and I'm going to disagree with you slightly. The Patriot and Compass are very similar but just as Purple is the color of Royalty and Yellow is the color of Pee, Compass looks like it was styled by a 4-year-old and Patriot doesn't.

At any rate, the 2012 Explorer or 2011 Edge are going to have a bunch more options/amenities and superior on-road handling.
