It better be rear wheel drive or the competition will win. At a confrence I was at they hinted it would be front wheel drive with an AWD option. That will lose market to Chevy's new RWD Caprice. They did not get a positive reception from the gather fleet and police crowd about this possibility.

They're stating it will be built in the same exact plant as the Panthers, I'm not sure if that means anything but it seems to me that would lend itself pretty well toward this being RWD. Concept is RWD.

If FWD is possible, this sounds like it will be based off the Taurus/MKS platform. If it can be configured solely for RWD, that would be great since FWD is meh and AWD could get expensive in terms of fuel use and maintenance costs. Then again, the local police here have some FWD GM's and a few Camrys as well.

RWD is much better for police work...PIT maneuvers are very hard on front wheel drive cars apparently...and RWD is much cheaper to repair and easier to maintain. I heard Taurus' were being offered as an option, but in the end, they were going to be too expensive.

No, st. Thomas is still closing. They're only saying that there will be no disruption in availability of police vehicles. That will be done by opening a new line at a different plant.

I just heard from the local fleet guy at our dealership that the new police vehicle will be based on the Taurus platform, and he seems to think it will be based on the Taurus SHO drivetrain...twin turbos and all. WooHoo!!! He also mentioned that it will likely be AWD as at least an option, and maybe standard. He said the AWD system would probably be pretty RWD biased though, as that is an easy thing to do with an AWD system. Once you have the hardware in place and the engineering done, biasing the power to the rear is easy. So it would probably handle more close to a true RWD car than a FWD car, but still have the grip and poor weather capability of an AWD car.
I told him I didn't care, as long as I got my twin turbos, flat torque curve, and 6 speed auto. The rest is gravy.

I have driven a WRX and an EVO on the track and raced an AWD Audi. They do not handle like a RWD no matter how biased the set up. They don't push/plow as bad as a FWD, but they do push and have some unique handling tendencies that are different from both a FWD and RWD car. We may have to steer our business to the competition if the AWD or FWD platforms are they new Special Services Vehicle. This bad timing for Ford with Chevy introducing a large RWD platform and Carbon Motors coming out with the E7 (if they can actually produce it).

I find it interesting that ford is doing away with a RWD sedan to use as a police cruiser. This is part of why ford remained at the top of the list for the past 5-10 yrs. I see ford losing alot more sale to the charger, and new losses to the upcoming caprice. Both will be RWD and in theory cheaper to maintain than the AWD Ford.
I hope I'm wrong, and I can't wait to see a comparo article on the three/four if the carbon motors car makes it.

The Charger has durability issues bigtime. I doubt anyone will be re-purchasing those.
All were down for brakes issues within months here. Very sad. Other issues too.
I predict the new Caprice will dominate the nitch.
