Value of a 1996-98 Mustang GT

Hi guys, I figure those of you on this forum are perhaps most knowledgeable on the value of 1996-98 Mustang GTs. I'm getting ready to sell my car that i've owned for 14 years. I've looked at KBB values and other sources but I wonder what these cars are actually selling for in the real world.

My GT has 90,XXXX on it all original. The only modifications are a Borla stainless steel cat-back and a K&N drop in filter. It is in perfect running condition and mechanically needs no work.

The car is fully loaded for the model year (leather, mach460, power seat, 17' wheels etc) the paint is in surprisingly very good condition with a light scratch across the rear bumper.

The two things that i'm sure will hurt the value of the car is that it has an automatic transmission and it has a rare color, Deep Violet Metallic.

leather is good with a slight tear on the driver's seat. In both physical and mechanical condition this car is probably an 8.5-9

I've tried posting pictures but I'm having an issue with the computer recognizing the pics I uploaded. On autotrader there is really nothing like it in my area so I cant gauge a realistic price.... is $5500 too much?

I don't think that $5500 is out of the question at all. I just recently purchased a 98 GT for $5800 with 63,500 original miles. This car also was a rare color in Bright Atlantic Blue, and was bone stock, except for CAI, and TB. Mine doesn't have leather, it has cloth. My paint is also very good, and I bought with a couple very small dent's that I need to get repaired. I'm sure your car will sell at $5500, I'd even ask more because it's a rare color.

5500? I'd buy that. Where I am, your car would fetch 8-9 grand.

What do you want to get for it? I'd guess you want $5500. List it for $6750 and let them talk you down to 5500 if they want to try...

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. Many of my friends feel that the car is worthless because "most guys would buy a 99-up" and that I should sell my car for $3500....

I've owned this car since 2000 and have taken very good care of it. I don't necessarily need to sell it but could use the extra cash for a don payment on a new daily driver. I currently have 3 other vehicles between my wife and I and haven't been driving it. I'd rather keep my 03 Cobra which is the reason i'm selling. The reason why I asked what people thought the car was worth is so I can justify selling the car and if I can get $5500, then it's worth letting go. Anything less than that doesn't seen worth selling.

I've debated for years if I could afford to modify it and keep it as a semi daily driver...

I think i'm going to be patient, I'd like the money but I don't need the money. Hopefully I can get some realistic buyers and not people looking to waste time. I've had a heck of a time selling cars in the past I know why so many people trade-in and avoid the hassle.

On that note, you can always list it at what you want... and if you're not in a hurry to sell, just wait and see if someone will pay it instead of lowering the price.

You know the saying, "It's worth what someone will pay for it." lol
Leave it at a high price and you never know!

I guarantee you someone somewhere is looking for a nice Deep Violet GT, hoping it's unmolested like yours. Like mentioned above, you just have to be a little patient. Try listing it and see what happens!

Once I have a warn enough day to detail the car I'm going to list an ad in Autotrader to run until the car sells. I think its $60 but they will literally run the ad until it sells. There is a guy 50 miles from me who has had his low mile 98 Cobra listed for 2+ years now. I could always lower the price if I become desperate so I think you may be on to something.

I sure hope so, I'm sentimental to it because I've had it so long. I was a Jr in high school when I bought it and now i'm 31, married and just bought a house! It's one of the only physical pieces of my adolescence.

I feel ya. My old V6 is still sitting at my parents', waiting for me to get it running again so I can sell it to my cousin. That being said, I don't want to sell it lol

$5500 would be about right in my area for one in perfect running condition with that milage and no body damage.

Thanks for the feedback, I think my price is fair. I just hope that I can find a buyer who feels that way also. The 1996-98 GT is a tough sell. Many buyers prefer the 1987-93 fox bodies or even the 1994-95 5.0 GT over the early 4.6 cars. 1999-04 GTs are starting to drop significantly in price so I got to try to move it soon.

I feel if I can't get what I want for it I may just start a long term project and do a PI head/intake swap along with a couple other performance and visual mods.

That's what I'm saying! I'd also do the PI Swap before sale. It's super easy, cheap and will increase the perceived value of the car, making it as easier sell to someone looking at 99-04 cars.

I don't think investing money in ya PI swap is worth it for me to turn around and sell the car. I'm hoping the car's originality will be a good selling point. The only aftermarket part of this car is a Borla cat-back exhaust

I'm planning on completely detailing the car and taking some new pics hopefully I won't have any issues, weather permitting.
